Just wondering, do other people here buy domain names based soley on the fact that they look promising? For example if you know nothing about the market of the name, say spacetravel.org (i wish!), or maybe more realisticly cheap-cars.com, what do you do? Do you do some research on the subject-line first and then make your decision? Or do you stick more with domains that you tend to think you understand better?

Yes. I do that much more often than I used to.

I picked up one domain I knew nothing at all about for $30 to find that it was making about $200 a month in PPC traffic.

I don't really have time to research markets, but with experience, some markets look more promising than others.

I never buy a domain unless I know it either a) makes money already or b) is highly generic, and will only increase in value through (in order) natural market growth or b) *little* promotion. 99.9% of the domains you see in any forum, not just here, fall drastically short of the mark.

spacetravel.org is a terrible domain. cheap-cars.com is almost ok.

I don't own spacetravel.org, I was just thinking it might be nice since space tours are in the near future. I personally prefer generic brandable names over specific names because I think they appeal to more people.

I have spacemen.org and I know knothing about being one except for Ali G's interview with Buzz Aldrin.

- but, yea, it's good to hound all the names you can get your hands on.
Keywords are important, but if your in it for the speculation, people are also looking for made up names as well.
You should go back to the root of the reason why we use domains, they're just to replace the IP of a computer with more memorable names, but what we do with them is quite different, though the same essential idea, its different now than it was then.

There's a lot of tools available online that can help you research good names.

I would buy domains on value or income, not what the industry is like.

There are of course, always exceptions.

I treat domains like stocks... the story always carries some weight, but if the numbers look good the story doesn't matter as much.

It's always good advice to stick to what you know, though.

If you go buying names in a foreign language that you don't know, or names with traffic from countries that primarily speak languages you don't know, you're going to have a harder time making money with those names.
