There are instances in which the subject contained in the domain cannot be expressed in fewer words. If that's the case and the search phrase is very popular, then you have a winner.

PeakPerformanceConsulting.com (not a great example) was a BuyDomains sale at $2300 just in the past week. How many letters is that?? And there are plenty examples like that one from week to week.

ok guys, recent domain sale was Invest.com Which would you prefer Invest.com or Investment.com ??? Please elaborate why.

I think length matters only based on how you view generic keyword domains.

Personally, if a keyword .com is too long but receives a ton of type in traffic (such as NewYorkRealEstate.com), I would use it for reverse branding - forward it to my website about New York (on some brandable like NYCLife.com or NYLife.com, etc.). I wouldn't build an actual website on the long name but use it to drive traffic to a shorter, catchier name.
