a domain shows in archive.org with pages going back 10 years- but the name dropped, so the recent reg shows the start date as one month ago-

is the domain one month old, or ten years old?

Your being deceptive stating the domain age is 5 yrs old if it has been reset. In saying that, if the website was very established and still has backlinks, there is value in that.

ok- thats what i was wondering- even if it was reset, if there is history, backlinks, etc... would it still be valuable-

i guess this is hard for me to understand why it is like that- if i had a antique table, and i sold it, no matter who bought it, or if i left it on the side of the road and someone grabbed it, it would still be a 100 year old antique table, right?

does anyone actually know why when a domain drops, it loses its established age?

There is 2 things to keep in mind with regard to SEO.

1) Domain age
2) Number of backlinks

If the registration date is reset, your back to square 1. However, if the website keeps some of the backlinks, if you build another site on the same topic, you already have some link popularity with the search engines, which is better then nothing.
