Since domain sales have temporarily slowed, I think its a great time for bartering. I have done several barters over the holidays and everyone wins. Its particularly good when you have an area you are focusing on. I have several niches. Two people can exchange domains and each end up stronger in their niches.

What percentage of domainers do bartering?

I am looking mainly for keyword .com domains, and I often give 5 or 10 of mine domains for one that interest me. If you have domains with low traffic and have not yet spent time or money on development, then they are good candidates for barter.

I think its easier to barter when you have lots of domains. If someone has few domains, then each domain will rise in importance in their mind; it is harder to achieve a barter, in this case. But it makes even more sense, since bartering to increase your portfolio is a good thing. Assuming of course that they are getting domains that have at least some dev value; because you dont want to just see more impending renewals.

If you can improve your niches, without laying out cash, that is a good thing.

I think it is better to send a list of all of your domains to people looking to buy names on the cheap, then tell them you don't believe in reseller prices and quote them bloated end user prices. By wasting their time you have them right where you want them for the bartering.

PokerPie,

Thanks for your comment, but I did not start this thread to debate domain valuation. People often dont agree on prices, its called 'negotiation'. What you call reseller or end user prices, someone else might put very different numbers. Its like the debate over valuation based on traffic; some people tend to think traffic is the most important measure, and others sell without any reference to traffic. For myself, my best sales have never been based on traffic. And I have had sales on the forum in a wide range, and also to end users in a wide range. I have sold a one-word domain to and end user for $200, and have sold 2-word domains on the forum for $xx,xxx.

Some people like to put pressure, to get a good price, and thats fine as long as they are polite. But IMO there is no automatic price, and I personally dont believe in domain valuation because there are too many variables.

Its all negotiation. And in tough times barter is a good alternative for those that like barter.

Yes that sounds good to me. So when somebody says something like 'I am buying domains at 65% of reseller prices or 12 to 18 months earnings' I think it would be a good plan to send them a list of over 100 domains, have them spend over an hour analyzing my domains, and then when they select a few they are interested in, tell them 'sorry, i do not believe in end user prices and i don't sell based upon traffic'.

Wasting peoples time and using deception in the sales process is absolutely ethical and professional and a terrific way to operate your business. This is even better than bartering.

In addition to a "barter of domains", a bartering of services is also a prime consideration.

Get artists, programmers, writers, and other skills together and bust the hell out of getting domains up from parking and to live websites.

Then you have your own group working towards a common cause, you are able to network your sites together, and the cost to each participant is nil as each skill contributes to the cause.

Thats an EXCELLENT point. Dnf members have a lot of skills. We should network more to get our sites developed. A good resolution for 2009!

Regardless of domain sales being up/down, economy good/bad, or even qty of domains owned.

I would always recommend keeping an open mind when it comes to your bottom line (revenue/sales) and know that bartering is just another way to keep it "fresh" and to get inventory moving.

Business is business..

Not sure if its just me but I don't like to see any numbers sitting still for too long.

Good Luck to all!

Thanks,

Juan
