I think that there is still some space for a newcomer.. however you need to make your moves wisely and accept that you can't compete with the bigger guys, unless you have some serious funds available.

I also think that in the long term domain value will raise, probably in 5-10 years n00b will say "Oh, you was lucky buying AutoParts.com for just $80,000"

The great thing about domains is that new terms are created every day. "wii" did not exist 1 year ago. New internet users are coming online every day. And it's not truly "competitive" in that no one has to lose in order for you to win.
