Remember buying like 30 - 3 letter .org's for $12 per domain. Later sold them like $20 each.. Think I would have done some better profit if would have kept them and sold now ;)

Sold a bunch of 3 letter .net's way to cheap.
For example i had a premium .net and .org pack (like abc.net and abc.org) and I sold the pair for below $200! (Cant remember the exact price).

Also I remember checking my old email. In the inbox I found some really old emails from way back when I started domaining. I had posted in a domain forum that I wanted to buy 3 letter .com domains. Got some emails with alot of OK 3 letter domains in the price range $200 - $300. Also read my reply - "Thanks, but thats over my budget for now" :disappointed:

Oh well! Im still happy!;)

I have a whole list of regrets.

I could have bought so many generics....

templates.com for 30k was one of them.

There were many more.

One of my regrets is selling a generic to you :)
Well, not really a regret since I reinvested the money well, but you get the idea.

When first getting turned onto it, back in 99' treating it like a hobby, rather than a career. Taking the mentality that I couldn't afford something, rather than I can't afford, not to afford. And spending to much time registering creative names, rather than focusing on the most basic of ideas, and going after existing owners.

Thinking all the good names were taken back when I got into this in the in the late 90's...

History has a way of repeating itself...so I would say not to make this mistake today.

I know you were kidding but someone actually did let that expire and someone re-registered it on - 1998-07-31

I regret the fact that I am such a penny pincher. I thought domain names were too expensive 10 years ago. I knew that domains and the internet would be a big business, but failed to capitalize on the potential. That was the same time I started to invest in stocks. Should of started my own Dot Com in 1999-2000 when I was buying dot com stocks - duh.

Can't look back now - it's about the future.

I feel better reading this thread as i ve made a stupid move selling one of my favourite geos .org domain for $300+ in the last geo moniker auction. I feel stupid because i trusted moniker for having a good amount of attention behind the silent auction so i put the reserve really low as i thought this domain was a killer to have only one bid.
I also feel more stupid cause i bought this domain for $2000 last yr and sold it for $300+.

Ahhh...... I missed adding that one to my list. I personally don't recommend using Moniker/Snapnames live auction events unless they can absolutely guarantee the name is in the "live auction" and not pushed into the "Silent Auction" section which no one pays attention to (Even then - I really don't like the live auction events). IMO - the silent auction sends a message out to everyone "this name wasn't good enough for the real auction".

Actually - I have seen some tremendous names sell extremely cheap at these live auctions events including one of mine. I personally was thankful I didn't sell another name that was listed in the mid-high 5 figure range in a recent live auction as I had a higher lease with purchase offer that I had previously rejected (the name really is worth a strong 6 figures IMO). I also hate to have my names tied up with exclusive agreements. I've had to ignore/reject Sedo & email offers on names that were in the "exclusive zone".

I personally think Sedo's 7 day auctions are the best auction format for selling (besides private sales). I feel you will get the largest domain buyers audience at Sedo.

(PS - I do however recommend Moniker as far as a registrar)

I don't really don't have the depressing stories some of you guys have, mostly because I was late getting in the game.

However, my dad certainly does. He is an independent marketing consultant who was on the internet as early as 1993. According to him, he had quite the collection of domains at one point, though he forgets a lot of them. A couple he does mention are Grow.com, GhostWriter.com, and Gamesman.com. He says he simply forgot about them, as they gradually expired. Of course now he has regrets about it.

Wish I paid a little more attention to what he was doing back in the day.

Yeah ditto on a lot of the posted regrets.
I registered some bad ones, sold some too soon, too cheap, started in 1998 and followed the masses by jumping ship in 2001 and focused on being a corporate rat for awhile when I could have already been successful had I persevered...
but my biggest regret is not learning from my mistakes! So now after feeling the pain twice no more selling without protection. Must be verified, have pos. feed and anything over $500, escrow no matter what! Got it...finally.

I only regret being too poor when I had some chances and too ignorant when I wasn't poor.
