Hi

I got some emails asking

"What is your asking price?"

What is the best response to such emails?

Should I include similar domain sales in reply email?

I appreciate your input.

before you send any reply make sure you have a value in mind that you know is accurate and the price you are willing to sell it for. Either tell him your rock bottom price right away and don't budge or start a little bit higher.

Send any data you might have about the name (stats, earnings, keywords - where applicable)

Hello ,

Thank you for your message.

We would like to develop a site for this domain. However, if we received a
significant offer, we might consider it.

Do you have an offer in mind?

Regards,
XXXX XXXX

(get them to throw the first number out there). If it's a ridiculous lowball, then leave it at that and never reply to them again. If they are serious about buying the name at a premium price, they will contact you again, you can be sure of that.

I only start throwing stats at them and raise good points (and comparable sales) once negotiations have gotten off the ground.. But not at the early stages, at that early point just see where they are money wise by making them come out with a number. Save the comparable sales charts and stats for the "closing" of the sale and negotiations, not at the beginning stages. Don't give them too much too soon, you'll need that ammo to close it up (and to move them up a few times ;)).

Also ask them in your first reply what company are they with (if it's not shown in the email). I love throwing that at them.
Recently someone contacted me with a gmail account asking me if a domain was for sale. I responded-

Hello,

We get inquiries constantly regarding this domain name. What company are you with ?

Regards,
XXXX XXXX

He responds that he is self-employed and he is looking for a name for his little brother.. I didn't bother responding. Asking them what company they're with saves time. Companies who are serious about buying a domain name never have a problem revealing who they're with. Just part of the weeding out process.

very good post Acquisition and Compassion.
Actually I was also wondering just like James.

Would love to hear more from other experienced end user sellers.

I send a single line reply to emails coming from yahoo, gmail etc.most of em are n00b domainers playing around or trying to get a very cheap deal.do your homework before you send though.google the email from which an offer has come, check ip to find their country etc.

Hi

I got some emails asking

"What is your asking price?"

What is the best response to such emails?

Should I include similar domain sales in reply email?

I appreciate your input.

one way when getting an inquiry:

you can respond with a lot of blah blah about some "made-up" plans you had for the domain, to give an added impression of value,

but in the end i will just include a link for them to make an offer thru sedo.
(be sure to "fill-in" some general data in the Description area for your domain, that relates to the message sent to the inquirer)

you can set a minimum bid amount at sedo on the domain, so you don't have to include it in the email, if you wish.

another way:

respond with some blah blah about some plans you have to develop, but include a minimum price range you would consider and/or some of the previous offers you've received.
(only if they were high enough to satisfy your current minimum)

if they respond favorably, then you can direct the transaction process thru your choice of services.

Acquisition raises good point about asking "what company are they with".

perhaps this could be done in the first reply, without including a minimum if you want to test their buying power.

Got this response today when I made an inquiry on a name. I thought I would post it because it's not bad (and may be helpful). He uses the comparative sale angle, and doesn't list an actual asking price (which is the formula I use as well).

Hello,

Unfortunately, you're not alone. I've had HUGE interest in this name. More than any other name of the hundreds I've owned. I wouldn't sell it by itself, though, because I actually have the complete "six pack" of:

cheapperfume.com
cheapperfumes.com
cheapcologne.com
cheapcolognes.com
cheapfragrance.com
cheapfragrances.com

and I'll advise you that discountperfumes.com ALONE apparently sold for $80,000. As you would presumably agree, the above 6 have a lot more value combined than the one solo "discountfragrances.com". Make me an offer if you're interested in the group. I haven't been intending to sell the names, but I would give consideration to strong offers.

Regards,
___________.

He did an admirable job of making the buyer think he'd have to overpay to buy cheapperfume.com (because he doesn't want to sell it alone, or so he makes it seem).

If someone sees this and contacts him, and buys those names, I would hope he would give me a small % for posting this . lol
