Hello ,
Thank you for your message.
We would like to develop a site for this domain. However, if we received a
significant offer, we might consider it.
Do you have an offer in mind?

XXXX XXXX
(get them to throw the first number out there). If it's a ridiculous lowball, then leave it at that and never reply to them again. If they are serious about buying the name at a premium price, they will contact you again, you can be sure of that.
I only start throwing stats at them and raise good points (and comparable sales) once negotiations have gotten off the ground.. But not at the early stages, at that early point just see where they are money wise by making them come out with a number. Save the comparable sales charts and stats for the "closing" of the sale and negotiations, not at the beginning stages. Don't give them too much too soon, you'll need that ammo to close it up (and to move them up a few times
).
Also ask them in your first reply what company are they with (if it's not shown in the email). I love throwing that at them.
Recently someone contacted me with a gmail account asking me if a domain was for sale. I responded-
Hello,
We get inquiries constantly regarding this domain name. What company are you with ?
Regards,
XXXX XXXX
He responds that he is self-employed and he is looking for a name for his little brother.. I didn't bother responding. Asking them what company they're with saves time. Companies who are serious about buying a domain name never have a problem revealing who they're with. Just part of the weeding out process.
