China is actually only dodgy for those who haven't been there and tasted the famous Beijing roast duck fresh from the furnace of the Grand Hyatt in Beijing.

That's exactly it...

Grand Hyatt? Your domains must be doing well... I can only afford immodium + noodles at the xinjiang village outdoor restaurants.

So you are not a Mole at all, but a Squirrel.

The investment without revenue, is a little trodden path, which is why the returns are potentially huge!

Yes, I personally have sold several dot CN for good prices.

Why shoud owning the .cn be difficult. There was a full grandfathering proceedure carried out when dot CN was launched. Anyone with a vested interested had more than ample opportunity to subscribe. I don't think ownership of .com.cn now infers any right over .cn.

Costs vary greatly across China, and depending on whether you eat at a tourist establishment.

My partner and I had seafood at a hotel restaurant in Fuqing, a very small city, we had steamed grouper (the whole fish), clams, squid, and another two dishes, plus 2 waitresses on standby, the meal cost 50/60 yuan for the 2 of us. I suspect we were charged tourist price, so locals might eat the same meal for maybe 30/40 yuan.

The domains I have sold have been latin character acronyms and English Keywords. I actually only have a handful of dot CN IDN, as I believe that dot com will prove a better investment.

Although, dot CN is on fire, it still has a long way to go to catch dot com in the Chinese Market.

I'd be curiouis to see a breakdown on .cn names by language and by subdomain (.com.cn), which I think would be more comparable.

Another factor in .us is that we also have many domains in the .mil, .gov, and .edu domains (not to mention a head start on the gTLD's) which in china would be contained under .cn adding to the figures. I know of several cities and states that have moved from .us to .gov when they were finally allowed to.

{edit} Actually, I went to the link shown in the first post. and found this:

.com.cn - 343,416
.net.cn - 36,135
.org.cn - 13,984
.gov.cn - 21,437
.cn - 522,227

187,813 subdomain.cn existed before the plain .cn was opened up. The stats shown for .us is 944,288 registrations.

First, I'll bet a lot of the .cn are duplicates of the .com.cn and .net.cn (redundancy). Second, there is no .com/net/org registerable subdomain of .us, therefore the .us domain is really more like double that of ".cn". I think the title statement to this thread is probably a little off the mark. Not to mention the fact that US companies prefer .com. I don't think you can really compare raw numbers of ".us verses .cn"

There may be a lot of truth in your analysis, but frankly it is irrelevant. By the time of the next Olympics in Beijing, dot CN will be the second or third largest registry on the planet. It will be much bigger than dot US, which itself will have become a major phenomenon.

Both registries will outpace dot de, which currently has about 9 Million registrations. Dot Com will still be number one and it is possible that there will also be continued rapid expansion in dot net.

Economics and demographics will ensure that dot CN expansion continues at lightening pace, and frankly you ain't seen nothing yet. In the US the realisation that dot com is not actually the ccTLD, will ensure that this domain is increasingly used for domestic advertising.

Not sure whether .mil, .gov or .edu are exclusive to US institutions, but that assumption is also likely to be seriously challenged.
