YES, Although many here might disagree, I think the more ICANN releases nonsense TLD's like this one and others they released already, the more confusion and distrust they create in cyberspace, making visitors more reliant on the TLD they have used since the birth of the internet.... Just my 2 cents.

I think dumping .xxx was a good move. All it would of done is nearly double the X-Rated sites we already have.

There was a documentary on CNBC this week "Porn- Business of Pleasure" that did a segment on how the traditional porn industry is getting financially strangled by the internet.

Well, .bi domains can already be registered, it's a valid ccTLD.

So I take it that some people here at DNF are opposed to a TLD ".gay"? Let me ask you a question. Are you also opposed to ".bi"? I assume not. Because most domainers have no clue about the existence of ".bi". And thats the whole point: ".gay" is a community TLD. It's for the gay community and limited to it. As long as you are not gay there is no need to care about the TLD. And the overwhelming response to the ".gay" plans is very supportive.

There's no need for politics. When ICANN opens domain extension registrations to everyone in around 2012, anyone who has around $200k or so will be able to create their own domain extension, presumably with their own rules governing it.

But you are right: With ICANN timelines you never know for sure.

What exactly is the mindset behind creating a TLD that screams of segregation? Is it to give the creators a sense of security or camaraderie?

The Internet is already divided in several major TLD's that are basically technical. Then, the ccTLDs are about geographical location.

Creating TLD's like .gay, .berlin, .nyc, .basketball, .food is like setting up walls inside a restaurant with labels: For seafood customers, For meat lovers, For pasta eaters, For vegetarians.

Let's not forget the real reason: money. ICANN wants the goose that lays the golden eggs.

I think it's a great idea, can't believe everyone is against it. Can you imagine 200 years in the future having just com, biz, org, net still? Universal extensions are inevitable, otherwise may as well just use com, if that happens then don't use extensions at all. The strong extensions will survive, the gay community will make good use of it. They even have gay nightclubs!

200 years into the future the "Internet" or whatever it will be called, will be very different from today. I don't even want to begin to speculate. But I think a good vision of it is in the books of William Gibson; popularized by the Matrix movies.
