doesn't tld stand for top level domain which is the .com or .net bit. Surely you want to appraise the domain rather than the tld, or have I misunderstood.

yes, tldappraisal makes no sense, the appraisal would be of the sld, not the tld.

Do I think wrongly?

TLD stands for Top Level DOMAIN, but you say it is about domain??
Of course it is extension part, but also an important part of appraisal and makes sense to me.
SLD without TLD can't be appraised, besides TLD is more recognazible.
E.g. GenericTLD.com is even senseless, but makes it.

BTW, what you proposed to him, Dobbery?
By now should be already registered.
