Hello all,

I am going to me moving some domains around and am curious if a domain has ever dropped when transferring it from one registrar to another.
I want to be as cautious, so am curious if I should be aware of any possibility of losing domains during transfers....

Thanks,

No. It's impossible. If a domain is scheduled to actually drop (and become publicly available), a domain company won't allow you to make that transfer unless you renew the domain.

I'm not sure I agree with meganerd.

I believe many registrars DO allow transfers to be initiated very close to expiry.

Also, there is no guarantee that you won't have problems during the transfer which could mean that the transfer has to be restarted, and consequently being that much closer to being expired.

If the question is can a domain name expire at a different date than it's normal expiry due to being transfered, the answer there should be no. (e.g. if expiry/renewal is in 3 months time, the domain won't expiry early because of a transfer).

Let us know if we still haven't answered your question to your satisfaction.

p.s. To clarify, I see that meganerd is referring to a domain which has already expired. It is true that most registrars won't let you transfer a domain that has already expired, but I know of at least one that DOES let you transfer an expired domain. And their argument is that it is up to the registrar whether or not they allow an expired domain to be transferred. Most registrars will NOT be happy to let an expired domain be transferred out.

Thanks DotNetKing...

I am transferring names that have at least 90 days... sometimes years before registration is due...
I just want to make sure that the registrars don't 'lose' the name during the hand-off process.

I am hoping the transfer process doesn't allow this, but I don't have much experience and wanted to know if there is such a thing as a name getting 'lost', 'unregistered', etc. during the transfer process.

If so, then I will limit the amount of moving domains around.

Thanks!

While the implementations and rules differ from registrar to registrar (some will even allow you to transfer after expiry), one the transfer is initiated at the registry (which should show in the whois, pending_transfer or similar), the domain cannot be deleted until the transfer is completed. And since the transfer renews the domain, it would not be deleted after the transfer completes.

That being said, I would highly recommend to start any transfer at least 30 days before the expiry date.

I had a few domains go into redemption with enom while waiting for transfer to finalize. I assumed all was well until I saw another site on one of my domains. Enom sold 3 of them. And no, I didnt get an email even though my contact info was up to date and i check email very often without spam filters.

That said: enom and all of their friends have lost my business and have had bad press as a result. I've encouraged some to get out as well. In the end their integrity is very low and with such large investments we have to be picky who we choose to secure out domains.
