You're basically arguing against the value of domains in general, which is a treasonous offense on DNForum, punishable by hanging.
Yes, you are right, this is what I state to a certain extent.
How much would you give purely for the domain: craigslist.org, flickr.com, fc2.com, pinterest.com, xhamster.com, tmall.com, imgur.com, stackoverflow.com, alipay.com? These are all in the world's 100 most visited websites (dnforum is 5214th...). Yes, you need a great domain for a successful project, but it doesn't need to be an exact match dictionary domain.
Yes, website development is an important factor in getting trust and conversions. No kidding. Apparently, there are no other factors involved with success?
I won't get into the .net/.com issue. But, by all means, please provide your list of "thousands of domains"!
ExCars.com, xcars.com, exclusive-cars.com, exc1.com, xclusive.com, premiumcars.com, selectedcars.com, topcars.com, top-cars.com, dreamcars.com, luxcars, toplux.com, and countless brandables for which one need some brainstorming. Any of these domains would be perfectly suitable for the same purpose.
Don't get me wrong, I love ExoticCars.net, I would loved to own it and develop it as well (in fact, I have a very similar domain half way in development now), but saying that this domain is worth well beyond the appraisals because it has potential to sell luxury cars is just stretching too far.
