Do you people really think we should just force companies to pay people to stand around and make nothing? Maybe you can just make a law to have every company immediately hire 20% more people?

Maybe you should look at how government incentives provide perverse motivations and lead to bad decisions - with all the bailouts, you will see the results of this on a large scale in the near future.

In 2005, the state of North Carolina, the County of Fosyth, the city of Winston-Salem offered up nearly $15.5 million in incentives to entice Dell into locating here for their new computer production facility.

It worked.

Dell built a gorgeous brand new facility. They have hired about 900 people, of which 600 are of the promised 1500 full time employees.

Today, 4 years later, they announced that they will cease operations here in January 2010. All part time employees, 300, will be let go immediately and the 600 full time will be gone by December.

All jobs will be outsourced to Mexico and other countries.

There is never a downside for these businesses. The get handouts by the boatloads, given tax forgiveness by communities, and hold no feelings or remorse towards those being screwed over.

The total given to Dell (State, County, City) was $281 million.

$15.5 million was from the city (which all indications are a big legal battle is brewing over Dell not meeting the stipulations attached to those incentives)

I can't stand Dell either.

Mainly because my recent purchases with them were crap and needed 2-3 engineers (per purchase) to come out and fix them. Plus their customer and technical support lines are annoying as hell since no-one listens to what you say.

After my laptop was still messing up after either the 2nd or 3rd repair, I decided I wanted a refund. I rang them up (to a place based in India; via the general phone number since obviously Dell hide any information about getting a refund) and explained that I wanted a refund. They said "Why?" the moment I said "Because my laptop is still broken despite..." I got transferred to techinical support.

So I asked to be transferred back to customer services. They do that. I start explaining my problem, and again the moment I mention "broken" or "repairs" these morons put me straight back to technical support.

So I asked to be transferred back to customer services. This time, quite annoyed, I then started with things like "Listen to what I say before you think about transferring me please..". This time, after explaining my problem in full, they transfer me to..

.. the sales department.

This went on for a while. Around the 7th attempt to speak to someone (and, as an FYI, you can only speak to a manager after getting through to a department and explaining your problem in full - but a manager of, say, sales or techinical support couldn't help with refunds, so it was pointless trying to get to a manager, too) I pulled out the Terms And Conditions, and there was a clause about being fit for purpose (etc). Hence I quoted this, said it was breached, and wanted a refund. The response..

"Ahh I see... you want technical support?"

Anywhoo, I ended up being on the phone for around 30 minutes and in that time got transferred around about 14 times.

It always annoys me when companies treat people this badly. Unfortunately Dell are yet another company who are massive, hence they don't care when it comes to customer service.

On the other hand, things like this and then taking the p**s (as in the original post) just re-inforce my boycott of Dell. Awful company.

All you have to do is search dell jobs in google news and you'll see the are cutting jobs in many states. Here in Ottawa they cut something like 1000 jobs last year.
