Some new info ...

Turns out that StarGate has me listed as the owner of 13 different porn-related domain names, thanks to the clown that lifted my contact info.

Plus they admitted that the same clown has roughly 1,600 porn-related domain names registered through them with fraudulent contact info including names like Peter Pan and Email addresses like [email protected].

Their sales guy promised to Email a list of my 13 names, but nothing from him thus far. He also stated that if I sent a FAX with those names listed, they would remove my contact data from WhoIs.

damn i would have called or sent an email to stargate to get the domains trasfered to you

that would have taught the dude a lesson

but hey thats just me

and perhaps a worthwhile one. There is nothing stopping this clown from using your contact data. But if he loses a lot of domains that way, then he might decide to stop doing it.

I haven't done anything yet, since StarGate has failed to send me the Lucky-13 list as promised. I'll try sending them a letter-head FAX with instructions to change the Email address for ALL domains registered in my company name.

Thanks DomNet. Once I figure out the actual domains I "own" it's likely I'll be filing reports such as you suggested wherever I can.

My approach will be to do it in writing via postal mail since there's a pornmaster threatening me with a law suit for stealing his pics via domain names I "own". So, I'll need as much paper-trail as I can generate.

Sure wish I could find the SOB that started it all.

You should try contacting Stargate and request that those domains be deleted since you are technically the owner...

Been there ... tried that ... failed. So, approach "B" is to attach a legit Email address to the account and then proceed to dump them on my own somehow.

Sent my FAX to StarGate requesting Email change 30 minutes ago ... will see what happens next.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but -- I believe --

All the person accusing you of copyright infringement has to do is file a DMCA against you with the ISP hosting the site. The ISP will have 24 hours to pull down the photos.

I file DMCAs several times a week for copyright infringement. Many of the emails bounce back due to incorrect /whois information. The ISP, however, generally has a 'real' contact and will get in touch with the customer quickly. For me, they often pull down the pics while waiting to hear from the customer.

Well, I never received a DMCA complaint, but the website in question was successfully shut down by the complainant from what I understand.

Meanwhile, I'm jumping thru all kinds of hoops with the original registrar trying to clear my name.

Pretty sickening when a domain name can be initially registered using false information with ZERO name/address verification ... but to correct such false info and clear my own name requires notarized documents, certified letters, etc.

The system is screwed up ... the system sucks.

You guys are much too nice. Here's what you should have done:

1) Call Stargate - "Hello, yeah, I lost access to all of MY domain names because my email changed. Here is my new email...."

2) Create Stargate account for guy who complained that you were using his graphics. Push all the domains there, and change the nameservers to match his.

3) Call up complaining guy "DUDE... you now own 16 new domains, with traffic! Here is the password _____ Merry Christmas! <click>"

problem solved on all fronts, and you'll likely NEVER have your ID stolen again :)

Yep, makes sense. Getting past your step #1 is the problem though.

For Email change, StarGate told me to send a FAX (which I did). Then StarGate told me it had to be a notarized letter instead. I FAX'd that Friday and mailed the original today. Who knows what StarGate will say next ... they are extremely difficult to deal with.

In fact, I left a voicemail on their sales answering machine this morning (6 hours ago) ... still no call back.

StarGate told me last week that this same ID thief has over 1600 domain names fraudulently registered with them. Seems like somebody there would have noticed a trend after the first dozen or so ... but guess not.

Of the 13 names which StarGate said I owned last Friday, 7 of those names now show up in WhoIs as registered to:

Assuming this is the original "owner" and identity thief (which he must be since StarGate let him readily change contact info), any suggestions on what to do next??

Send an email with a whois link to the "theft victim", cc the "thief"... introduce them to each other, and let love bloom!
