Perhaps flippa should monitor itself.

All TM or Copyright violations.

Flippa.com must be doing something right what with these strong stats they published:

"Flippa is the world’s biggest marketplace for buying and selling websites. Over $400,000 worth of websites sold weekly. More than 4,000 bids for websites are placed each week. Over $50,000,000 in websites sold since we started."

I would love to know what the post-sale satisfaction rates are for flippa sold sites.

Incredible inflation of stats pre-sale is driving the sales.

Exactly my point, Gerry. I feel sorry for those that got sold on artificial stats. Makis.tv also wrote an excellent piece on how many "developed" domains on Flippa are scams.

Volume != quality.

Everybody can buy a crap domain and set up wordpress on it, then resell the whole thing as a glorified 'website'.
That's the business model of Flippa.
But those so-called websites will not take you very far. There is no easy money in development, because many people just suck at development.
Likewise not everybody will succeed at domain investing.

TBH I think Knibbe doesn't believe half of what he wrote.

Flippa has more interest in getting people to invest in websites and not in pure domain names. So I feel his comments are biased. Part of his comments referred to parking domains, which we all know has been poor for at least the past couple years, so no new news there. Domain sales reported weekly also go against his comments, they have been steady and strong even in an uncertain economy.

If I said that product A sucks over product B, I must back it up with facts. The problem with the majority of "developed" domains on Flippa is that they aren't developed in the true sense of the word.

Or is it Flippa vs Domain Investor? Who's richer?

Good on, Theo.

Hey Vincent :D The sad part of the article posted on the John Chow blog is that Flippa is insulting its very own customers; those that buy domains or developed web sites. And about trademark violations, they aren't keen on stopping such sales either.

The biggest concern that I see is these sites stats are phenomenally bogus. There is no history to back them up.

As for the business model - well, questionable at best.

I am going to create a website that will be a sales platform for developed sites without any validation to the stats posted, people will pay me to post on my site, and if there is ever an issue I can simply say Caveat Emptor.

This is not a sustainable model and is no different from any quick cash-grab sites. As the pressure mounts for the site to be more legitimate and back up the claims posted, it will be time to consider looking for a buyer and getting the hell out...especially since there are cases filed pending litigation of going after the sites and registrars that facilitate the sale of and allow the sale of TM names since they (and not the registrant) have the money and the means to pay steep fines and damages. There was another published article about this earlier in the week. Going forward, it is prudent for domainers to become "news hounds" for anything regarding domains.

Gerry, here's an example of a "developed" web site sold at Flippa for $20,000.

The sale occurred in 2008. Claims of huge revenue etc.

The buyer points it to a site called movienachos. I wonder why. I guess he realized he'd never be able to recoup his sizable investment.

There are numerous such examples, I am sure.

Thats why you got to do your homework on these sites, there is to many claiming crazy revenues and have only been going a few months,if i had to buy a site it would have to be established a few years first and then i would want to do some serious due dilligence...

Precisely. There's a long discussion over at the Flippa blog about what constitutes a developed web site. Flippa pretty much allows domains registered yesterday with a WordPress set up to be deemed as "developed". They changed the requirements and buyers aren't happy.
