Whenever I close an FTP connection (either disconnect, just close the program, or I get booted form inactivity) when I try to reconnect I get this error message:

Can't establish connection --> 64.140.103.20:21 @ Sun Jul 19 14:05:53 2009 (10054-38)
An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

It won't go away unless I reboot my computer, which can be a real pain.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

What FTP client are you using? You can try a different one (FileZilla, CuteFTP, FlashFXP etc.).

Where is the FTP server? Is it free or payed? Or is it your own?

Do you have a static IP?

Core FTP LE

The IP should be static and I am trying two FTP servers - one though HostMonster and the other though someone I know.

I found a workaround - sometimes it will work if I connect to the other then back to the one I was trying. :(

If you are running cPanel, login (once this problems occurs) and go to "FTP Session Control"

Are there a bunch of sessions there?

What happened with me loads when using Core FTP especially is that it creates lots of sessions, but then the limit is reached (all servers have a session limit - usually less than a dozen) and you cannot reconnect due to all these other sessions.

So *if this is the problem*, go to this session control, kill all sessions, and try again.

Could be it, might not be though :)

Does it happen at both hostgator and this server?

Also, when it happens, from a command prompt, try a netstat -n, and see what connections you have open? If you have a bunch of connetions to 127.0.0.1:21, then it's going through a firewall on your computer. If the connections are all direct to the server, it might be something else.

Edit: Are you using a third party firewall? Maybe it's proxying the connection and fouling things up?

It won't go away unless I reboot my computer, which can be a real pain.

This would seem to indicate it's something on your end. I would tend to think router or software firewall holding connections open.

You should try FileZilla (it's free), maybe that problem happens because of Core FTP.

Yes, FileZilla could be best. I had major problems like this with Core FTP before. Odd how there's nothing under session control, as others say this suggests it's something on your end. Maybe Core FTP is flooding the outbound FTP port on your end?
