I find this all very interesting, anyone have a link to the startup of youtube ?

You would think for $1.65 billion you could create something on your own. I suppose if you have the ability though to just buy someone out...

Makes you wonder what they could have done with a few % of that ridiculous figure thrown at a good development team, and the balance to bolster their ailing PPC business. Still, shareholders' funds -- who cares as long as the headlines pump the stock? And then of course YouTube has never made any money to date ... The mind boggles.

Edit: Post crossed with JP's.

youtube was getting a ton of free exposure on tv and many advertisers were lining up to get their products listed on youtube.

this was the reason for Big G's investment. and well worth it imo, as Big G still has 8 billion $ left after buying this.

What are you thoughts about Google now making Youtube into a multi-language site?

Local versions of Youtube using ccTLD domains.

lol..I was sitting here thinking about the free exposure youtube was getting on tv etc. For $1.65 billion google could have bought into a major network and flased their own project 50 times a day acroos the screens of the world. Heck the possibilities are endless, with that connection a major motion picture or 2-3 could have been used, tv commercials , tv shows etc.

Alas it is easier to just buy someone elses " success ".

Just watched a few news reports on it. Done deal.

Funny the founders started the site 20 months ago, ran off credit cards, havent been able to make it profitable, yet just received $1.65 billion. We live in a screwed up world, I tell ya.

Second on the agenda is to fire the worthless employees at google who couldnt create something similar, I mean it wasnt hard, infact it didnt even have to make money!

On a side note googles stock jumped due to the report so more than one way to look at something I guess.

LOL!!!

If "YouTube" was just a domain, 99% of the people here would have said it wasn't even worth REG FEE.

And people doubt the value of development and branding. HA!

I can think of 1.65 Billion reasons to the contrary.

Nice sale. WOW.

So it was worth $1.65 billion ?

Every member in this thread knows it wasn't " just " a domain sale and the brandability and developement factor played the key roles. Perhaps google will make this site extremely profitable and recover its investment in a mater of years. That isn't the point of discussion for me. The issue I have is a company with the limitless resources and money couldnt do it themselves, while 2 guys and a credit card could. Google should be ashamed imo.

Not to mention this developed/brandable site makes no money, and getting google to payout that amount is either the corporate waste we talk of at times or the reality google is no longer willing to be creative themselves, or cannot.
