One of the best domain-related services ever to come along (Exody.com) had at one point the most mickey-mouse webpage I have ever seen. The site there now is a thousand times better than it used to be (and it still won't win any web design awards, and could still use a makor facelift). I know this is because Duane had his hands full working on the back-end most of time, and had little incentive/time to create a pretty welcome page.
Point is...most times I am more interested in "what's under the hood" and not how pretty the paint job is.
