I'm totally new to this whole business, and it feels like I've entered the game a little too late. But I think I'll have a go at it. So far, the only questions I have are:

What's with .co tdls? Are they worth it?
If there is a well known brand with a registered .com tdl, is it worth picking up it's .us and/or .ca tdl?
What should I avoid when searching for my first few domains?

Thanks.

Your smart to ask before buying.

What's with .co tdls? Are they worth it?
===> .co is more marketing than value. But .co is getting quite a marketing push from Go Daddy and will be in the next Super Bowl commercials so worth a look.

If there is a well known brand with a registered .com tdl, is it worth picking up it's .us and/or .ca tdl?
===> No, you cannot register trademarks of companies.

What should I avoid when searching for my first few domains?
===> Avoid trademarks and avoid buying names just to buy names, find a niche and dominate that niche.

Before you buy, do alot of reading on the forum, the time you take to read will save you wasting loads of money.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm from PEI originally and I love Halifax. Best of luck. Just read many of the forum threads to learn as much as you can. Remember that is better to make an investment on a few good domains then it is to register domains shotgun style.

Welcome to the board!

Since Adam so kindly answered your questions about as well as I could have, I'll just comment that it's never too late to enter. Now is a good time to be buying domains because the market is still down from the economy. Internet business is extremely vital and domains are the backbone to it, so the down market is only temporary and is already back on the rise. I'd suggest reading a lot on the forum before you ever buy a domain. It beats learning things the hard way.

Welcome from Surrey BC! Love the Halifax waterfront - only one in Canada that can match Vancouver's...

Don't waste your time with .co when you could be buying .ca. :eek:k:

Hey, thanks everyone. Love the support.

DCG mentioned that I should "find a niche and dominate that niche," could someone elaborate on this? I haven't had a chance to get into the forums (just finishing exams), but I'm sure niche markets have been discussed thoroughly there. If anyone could just touch on the idea a little, that would be great.

A prime example of this in the .ca market would be the GoPro network www.gopro.ca. He basically has the home improvement market cornered. Another example would be a member here who focuses on Garden and Landscape domains. Me, I have domain ADD so I can't focus on anything ;-)

Hey eTalisman,

I might be driving through Halifax around the 29th/30th. If I am, I would be more than happy to meet with you for a beer and answer questions. I have been domaining over 10 years so I have made enough mistakes that I'm sure I can pass on some wisdom and answer a few questions.

PM me if you are interested.

Welcome to the forum ! This is your first step to becoming a domainer... your second step is to actually read the forum and don't blindly buy names. That's a mistake everyone seems to make. There's different reasons people buy domains.. for some it's an investment, for some they have a passion for developing names. Dig deep and find your reason for domaining and you will be able to succeed.
