Hello,

I have a domain (no, it's not porn or anything illegal, just something American mass-media might not be thrilled about. But it's not illegal nor immoral by any stretch of the imagination.) that I want to be hosted on a good, reliable hosting company outside of the USA to create a legal barrier or obstacle against USA-originating law-suits.

I thought about the Cayman islands.

Anybody has had any experience with a reliable hosting company there? Any recommendations? Who's the biggest hosting company there?

Anybody willing to share his experiences about hosting in the Caymans? Can anybody recommend some other place other than the Caymans?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Wow! First it was off-shore banking, now it's off-shore hosting! :)

Sorry CoolDot, my server's at The Planet, smack-dab in the middle of Dallas!

Thanks WebCat. And as I said, I have no intentions for anything immoral or illegal, all I want is to avoid easy accessability to the top-gun lawyers of high paying corporations who may not like critique.

America is a great country but if you don't have enough money to pay for expensive lawyers then fairness is hard to come by.

And that is my ONLY reason for even thinking about offshore hosting.

But thanks for your comment.

However, they can shoot you down by registering a compaint with
the hosting company.

They can attack the domain at Verisign (Virginia, USA).

If you are located in the U.S., they can come after you directly.

Actnow, yes, I am aware of that. As I said, all I want is a critique-site that stands on a little safer ground than right smack dead in Dallas :)

Nothing I could do against that or else I need a server on Mars :)

By the way, just to make everything clear, the domain in question is CriticalNews.com so nothing illegal intended...
If I could afford to pay lawyers I would host in Dallas too. They've got good steaks there I hear :)

Anyway, thanks for your comments!

I can refer you to hosting it in Greece.
Then again, there are some great hosting companies in the UK as well.
Why specifically the Cayman islands?

P.S.
As someone else already mentioned, they can still come after you at the registry level and go for the domain, so I dont know If offshore hosting would help.

I understand cooldot.. I had Guilty.Biz and wanted SOOoooooooo much to highlight all the corupt business . but decided against it..simply because Free speech is NOT free.. (even when you are right)
They will crush you like a little bug..

Fo rme it wasnt worth the headache and expense..and it isnt going to change anything anyways..

They lobby for more loopholes and use their lawyers as hired guns..

Look at what Pharmacueticals are already doing just to prevent Americans from buying cheap meds in Canada..

so you are saying 'someone' will send their lawyer(s) after you for having a news type (or whatever) releated site that simply states your opinion?

Especially If you put a disclaimer that this is your opinion?
It can't be.
Al least not in Democratic counties...

seeker, I am glad you have strong confidence in the american law system. Let's just say I don't share this with you.

In my opinion, and this is not only true in America, but especially so here, the law has a tendency to speak in favor of those who can hire the best lawyers. And a guy with no money like me stands no chance against a big company with even bigger lawyers.

Look at the recent case where the guy who killed and chopped up his neighbour went free. Do you think that would have happened if he was a poor guy from the bronx? He was a millionair and hired the big guns and guess what? He's walking around on the streets again. I hate to see it but such is the reality of the justice system.

I love American and although I am not a citizen (yet) I am proud of many things in this country. And the idea of equal rights for all is a wonderful one, one worth fighting for. But it is an ideal and all too often I don't see it realized. The american prisons are full with innocent people who couldn't afford good legal advice.

And rather than just trusting that they won't sue me just to threaten me away, I'd rather make the website harder accessible to them. Call it building a protective wall if you want.

I wished I had your trust in the fairness of legal battles between small fish and big sharks. But until I develop that trust I will do what it takes to even the chances a bit. And no way am I going to cut corners on speaking the truth even if some don't like it. Because after all this IS what America stands on and this is why this is a great country.

I hope you (and others) are not offended by what I wrote here.

Thanks for your comments and thoughts.

Ahh... Peer1. Top notch data centre. When I have the money, that is where my servers will go. It just so happens that their main location is where I live (Vancouver), which is a definite bonus.

Verisign doesnt manage all domain extensions.

What about registering a extension that is managed outside of the US?

I dont think .cn would be a good idea becuase China seems to do whatever they want with the internet :-D

yes, in that case, one can get a domain that is managed by another country and host outside.

Unless I am missing something though, I can't imagine why anyone would want to shut down a site that is 'news' related and gives the opinion of its owner...?
Has anyone seen this site?

http://columbiacentral.com/dubya/

same as http://www.dubyasays.com

no one shut them down.
So, free speech does still exist.
