I have a $100 savings bond that was bought for me 11 years ago. At 1.25% annual, it will be worth less when mature than the cash would have been when purchased adjusted for inflation.

Now I know why the military doesn't have a "Buy Bonds" campaign anymore.

I just dumped my money into gold and silver just days ago when this all started. Record upswing today. Gold will continue to rise back to the $1000 level and beyond imo.

money will now go into gold, oil and bonds

wisely i kept my funds in mm, rate of return may be low but haven't lost anything on paper

though the buying power of those dollars is low

Well, chit. I just checked my Fidelity Retirement Fund. As of today, it is now worth less than it was right after the crash of 2000.

chit. chit. chit.

I am considering throwing some change at WAMU stocks since they are $2/share just to see what happens. Not sure if it is worth it now since they announced they are perhaps for sale.

ya well when you invest in money market accounts you are aware they may go under 100%. according to this interview some of them might lose 3%. that sucks but isn't that terrible. a lot better than a lot of stock investors.

this guy is also unrealistic. he is making it sound like there is a real chance the FDIC could go broke. the US government would sell all of our alaskan oil, the statue of liberty, the state of nevada and nude pictures of sarah palin before they allowed that to happen.

The FDIC is already technically in the negative. What they have left is suppose to be held in reserve.

"The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., whose insurance fund has slipped below the minimum target level set by Congress, could be forced to tap tax dollars through a Treasury Department loan if Washington Mutual Inc., the largest U.S. thrift, or another struggling rival fails, economists and industry analysts said Tuesday. "

A couple days ago JP Morgan Chase stated they have been in talks to purchase WAMU but the deal isn't done yet.

Wamu is cheap for a reason. Period. If you want to gamble and can't make it out to Vegas, that's just about the only valid reason to buy it :)
