I was scanning some ideas through DRT and found quite a few quality typos that were available. But my question is, when does registering a typo become a risky venture?

It all depends on the site or company you are registering typo's of. Some companies are more agressive than others.

The safest typos are generics like carisuranec.com or common mis-spellings carinsuranse.com etc. (Both examples are typos of carinsurance.com)

TM and company typos can be extremely risky, but as jdk said, it depends on the company, some are highly aggressive about it.

The best bet is to stay away from tm's and typos unless the typos are generic words...and chances are you are not going to find many of those that actually get traffic unless you plan on spending lots of cash to get them as they are 99% spoken for. Most of us have all cleaned up our portfolios and sold off or lost most of our tm/typo domains to the trademark holders due to wipo/C&D notices. You honestly are about 5 years late on this idea, it's just not safe or smart to do anymore and is why we have only kept generic typos. Good luck.

If they are typos of trademark protected words, you have significant risk. The risk is greater the stronger the trademark. Also, if you plan on putting up a parked page with adlinks, those links will likely gravitate towards tje trademark use.

Here are some typosquatting UDRP panel decisions from both NAF & WIPO for you to review before investing any money. Don't be a typosquatter. If your goals is to take advantage of typo traffic from a trademark protected brand, then you may end up with much bigger problems and liablity than an adverse UDRP panel transfer decision.
