Hi,

I was impressed and concerned when I first saw the iphone but then I gave it some thought.

All I have to say is I don't use Mac and I am not with Cingular. I don't plan on making a move to either. I'll wait and see what the backers of .mobi come out with. I have no doubt they have something just as impressive in the works
which will include .mobi in some way.

Azooza they have a 2 year exclusive agreement from what I understand. Surely the phone will be unlocked at some point down the line, but certain features (i.e. VM display) are exclusive to Cingular

My bet is they launch with Orange or T-Mobile in UK/Europe

It will be unlocked by OS X hackers probably within a week of release I know that Cingular will add value, but that will certainly be replicated worldwide in a short time. If Apple don't offer an unlocked version (carrier free) in Europe they know they'll be shooting themselves in the foot anyway.

Mind you, I have a feeling that their biggest problem will be keeping up with demand.

What you're describing is a buggy redirect. If the redirect was set up correctly, it would have detected the browser and resolution rather than whether it is a "mobile" device or not.

Your scenario doesn't make much sense to me. There is no reason why servers should not be able to detect browser and resolution and serve customized content accordingly. It has been done for years, and it's not going to change anytime soon.

I understand your point , it is a very good one.

But what can we expect from people?

Look at Google, so they have a buggy redirect?

Take out your PDA.. try this..

1.) On the normal google.com page with a desktop PC ADWORDS is accessible by a 2click - first click "Advertising Programs" then click on "Google Adwords"..


2.) BUT when I use my mobile device and I type in Google.com,
I get a forced redirect to a small Google site whereby I CANNOT access adwords at all by clicks!

See what I mean? Today, I can't have access to the full Google .com site, now what if that became the standard across the board? What I am saying is the full .com info site needs to be preserved accessible by the PDA anywhere just with scrollbars. Just as the .mobi can be seen by desktop PC , the .com needs to be seen ,and consistent, by the mobile device. Full info preserved on the .com is ideal for a user experience, the detects and redirects can be done on the .mobi (MOBIle)

i still don't know if .mobi will be successful, but imo sites need to be built specifically for mobile surfing and viewing

Yes, it's not very good on complex sites, but I've found it dead useful for many, using a Pocket PC or a Smartphone. I can get to my bank account through it, but I guess that's madness anyway

Hi, I checked out the site.. looks consistent with pc and pda versions (Treo 700W) That's what is ideal is to keep the same full info I see on the PC when I use my PDA.

The issue is not easy to understand, so I have been raising it for some time for some who might not see it fully yet..

The issue comes down to what is best for the user experience? Not what is technologically capable.. because that is not always the best to use (atomic bomb).

I want to advocate for the user experience, a sort of Internet human rights grassroots campaign, perhaps big onlookers read this forum; so, I wanted to put some ideas out there for feedback, improvement, and awareness..

What if I wanted so see a full info .com site on my PDA with scrollbars? I love scrollbars! I don't want reduced information. I don't need the .com to fit perfectly on my PDA screen. I need all the .com info in full. I like to write on the domainer forums just scrolling on my PDA wherever I am, don't redirect this hehe. I want the full pc site experiece (preserved info) on my PDA with scrollbars.. I want to have a choice between the full .com and the optimized .mobi.

Shouldn't I have that right on the go? It's not a matter of only screen resolution.. I want to have scrollbars on the .com on the go (if it means fuller, important info).. It's a matter of user experience, access, power and choice..

"sites need to be built specifically for mobile surfing and viewing" can be done on the .mobi.. but the question is, aside from advocacy to preserve .com info, what will we be able to expect from a .com?

A site can even "remember" your preferences.

i dont think iphone will have any impact on mobi. mobi sites arent just meant to be mobile versions of .com sites only. One company can own ringtones.com and make it so their site shows up well on mobile devices and another company can own ringtones.mobi and theirs will also show up on mobile devices. Both sites could have widgets and both could be bookmarked.

The question is can the sites muster enough will to do this..
Have a Full Site Version link on their .com for the PDA.

Because the expansion of markets to mobile is the new frontier for businesses..

Is the time then ripe for the dotmobi? How successful will DotMobi be as we witness the mobile revolution? Everyone here seems to agree that the next 2-3 years can be critical for public dot mobi awareness..

But is the 2-3 year scope more pertinent for companies' usage of .mobi? Then, momentum can be sustained without effort and spread virally as the public will access and be lead by what they see.. on TV.. on the web.. etc..

Another thing to watch is the appeal of DotMobi for new businesses..

Well there are some notable corporate registrations by existing companies, and the DotMobi consortium is a deep network. CES is a good sign for DotMobi already for 2007.. all eyes then are set on this powerful alliance and their potential.

But as a domainer, waiting for that tomorrow may cost us..
