I wouldn't get too excited. I can see the being shot down by the DOJ as an antitrust violation. Considering we are talking about the three biggest search engines, this could be seen as Microsoft trying to monopolize the market. Just my thoughts.
I would think there is more likelihood of action in the European courts. They already do not like Microsoft. Frankly, I hope it does not go through

how can this be seen as MS trying to monopolize with google strong in the scene?

It depends on where you live in the world. Google is huge in many places. Yahoo is huge in many places. MSN like it or not is huge in many places with Google trailing in third. I promise Google will take this to the DOJ if MS tries a take over.

True that. Either way Google will fight this.

While could be a very exciting deal to watch, have to keep in mind that even a merger between Microsoft and Yahoo! would only yield control over about 27 percent of the search market. Whereas Google alone controls about 65 percent.

But, this move would go a long way at giving the merged company a shot at catching Google in the future.

Apparently, you guys don't follow the stock market.

Microsoft announced that they are not buying Yahoo.

Indirectly, Yahoo and Microsoft are already working together.
Microsoft has a contract with the Overture division.

The Wall St. analyst said this morning that it would not be a successful merger
because their corporate personalities are opposites.

If anybody bothered to read the article before spouting off insanity, it's extremely more likely Microsoft is trying to acquire a stronger online advertising presence.

Why the hell would they buy a company that offers many identical features to themselves?

Weren't any of you around for the Hewlett Packard Compaq merger? The merger that was going to create the giant that would create a chain of mergers/takeovers/going out of businesses for major competitors (dell, gateway, and so on)? That merger went off HORRIBLY.

The stock in fact, is still recovering from the beating it took 5+ years ago.
