I came here thinking this kind of place would be safe. Same for Dp and NP. Looks like a leopards den instead.

It's been a couple of scammers here lately, but DNF is most definitely the safest and most professional domain name marketplace/forum you will ever find. :)

I just reported married.com stolen last week. Search dnf, same iranian guy too.

Nothing you can do except ask all the questions you can before moving forward.

It's a fine balance but when we have obvious data and evidence of a crime or scam, we act accordingly.

We do not harbor thieves when it's avoidable. We have accountability measures in place, and by requiring payment for membership, we ensure the highest quality and most unique domain community anywhere.

We encourage those that are serious about their membership to become verified -
http://www.dnforum.com/dnfverified.php

We also have some best practices listed here:
http://www.dnforum.com/bestpractices.php
and from that page there is a link to the discussion where you can add your ideas to the list.

Looking at the big picture, the economy is not doing so good. However, the domain industry is at a state where its never been better. People are eying what we're doing with domain names and everyone wants a piece of the action. There has never been a time where you need to protect your investments more than now and take security precautions and safety measures, due diligence and research, etc. Just make wise decisions and trust your intuition.
It's also a community effort. We encourage members to report posts that don't conform to the rules of our community.

Those that have made good investments in the domain space have a lot of good things to look forward to. There's a lot of business to be done here, its your playing field, so make the most of it.

If you had a 'real' store with 'real' items you would be dealing with stealing customers, stealing employees, cost of security devices, and potential lawsuits by those accused of stealing by your employees.

Not sure what background of business you came from, but we STILL have it easier than most industries.

As several have mentioned, DNF is one of the safer forums out there. Compared to others, you do not see many auctions go unpaid for, stolen domains being sold, or users running of with others money. Sure some months you will see more than others, but overall IMHO DNF is one of the safer forums out there.

The things you have to worry about at DNF is whining 12 year olds reading the word sex in the chatroom or in a forum topic crying to the moderators, the old timers that have been on the forum for a long time having to put in their 2 cents all the time (you will get used to it, it's quite amuzing a lot of times), the one's who have a high budget and think they are the s.hit (but we know where they can go), and of course, the white folk who think that are chinese but act black throwing the racism card all the time. Overall, it is a great place to talk on and do business with.

And of course you have Focus and Acro, but we will leave that for another time :)

I PP'd for verification and faxed an electric bill twice. Once, within minutes of my PP, the second time about 3:36PM EST today.
Of course, unlike the majority here, ALL my info is available here and on several of my sites. Be more when I get out of the lazy mode and crank out a couple more.

You could do a whois history report and contact the previous owners.

Also keep in mind that some claim a domain is "stolen" and they may either be lying or their may be some long complicated story behind it's history that a person may "summarize" by calling the domain "stolen."

If somene says a domain is "stolen" the first I ask to see is the Police report. That usually ends the conversation right there.

Of all the domaining forums DNF is by far the premier one. The one thing that should be noticed by new members is that the experienced members as well as the mods and admins look out for anything that is not kosher.

The majority of members here hold their reputations as their most valuable asset, and rightly so, and likewise hold the forum in high esteem, again rightly so. No one though can stop the initial activities of a scammer unless their actions are nieve and transparent. Such 'attacks' on the domaining community by scammers are unfortunately part of life, similar attacks occur in every other industry, but what DNF and its membership offers is a community that although made up of very diverse and very independant individuals also has a collective will to protect itself against such scammers. A scam against one member is seen as a scam against all members and indeed DNF itself!

In the world we live in we have to be constantly vigilant, but you could not ask for a better form of defence against scammers than belonging to such a community as exists here.

I believe you Billbo. I see the 'legit' folks keeping an eye on things and reporting promptly.

Stepped on my own pecker here a couple of times by not interpeting a post properly before I replied. I mostly sit back and soak it all up.

You lost me here, unless you see a police report the name to YOU isn't stolen ? You mean AFTER you bought the name correct ? Obviously you wouldnt hand a name over after buying based on an email or phone calling stating it was now give it back.

I would go further into legalities when a stolen name is bought but fear it may only add to the temptation so I will refrain.

Actually most of the cases I am talking about did not happen to me. I have watched claims here where people claim a domain was stolen when in actuality it dropped or was part of some business deal or employee and the facts are not clear.

It happened to me once. More than 6 months after a supposed hijacking a registrar (associated with an ICANN official) contacted my registrar and claimed to have "proof" the domain was hijacked. Apparently the only "proof" they had was that the domain had a different prior owner. Who knows what transfers were made or what money changed hands and I guess I will never know. I asked them to provide the Police report and I explained I had escrow.com paperwork from the purchase ... and I never heard back.

There is an official procedure to recover stolen domains but your registrar has to go along:

Reasearching whois history is a must indeed and domaintools is very useful for that purpose. The $15/m subscription is money well spent.
