A few days ago I got an email from a kennel asking about GermanShepherdDogs.org - I did some searching and it does seem like they're a German shepherd breeder here in the USA.

I have a site on the domain (WP based site) but I ahven't been able to update it in a while plus with another purchase I made recently I was considering transitioning over to that domain.

The .net is for sale at Sedo.com and a few weeks ago and I emailed the owner (WhoIs) and their response was a sign that either:

- They're insane at the value of their domain
- They're leaving themself a LOT of negotiating room (and I mean A LOT)
- My domain is worth a lot more than I think it is

So, thoughts on what my domain might be worth? German Shepherds are the most popular breed of dog in the world (and has been for almsot 100 years) and the most recognizeable breed. "German Shepherd Dog" is the official / correct term for the breed.

One of my reservations is that Kiri (my GSD) may bite me if I sell the domain). ;) My biggest concern is that I don't agree with their breeding practices.

Three words and .org does not translate to big money in my eyes. I don't think there's any way this domain is worth more than low $x,xxx.

If you don't agree with their breeding practices in such a way that you would do all in your power to inhibit them from continuing their practices, don't sell it to them. However, if it's only a minor disagreement, don't let it get in the way of a lucrative sale. Do what your heart says is right.

As for Kiri, you can fill the void by buying Kiri.org, which presently resolves to a parked page, and making a page about her :)

I've noticed with dog breeds .org is #2. I've had a couple where I was able to park the 3 top TLDs (.com, .net, .org) as well as .info and .us with a few dog breeds and the best performers, in order, were .com, .org, .net, .us (very close to .net, though), and way behind was .info.

I looked back at a project I did last year and found that I've contacted them (I contacted many (dozens) GSD breeders in the USA to find out how ethical or unethical they are) and they were one of the biggest BS artist response I got (didn't give any proof to their claims and the ones you can verify on your own couldn't be verified). Chances are I am not going to sell to them.

Kiri has her own page on our kenel site. She did have her own site (kirigsd.com) but it's been pojting to the kennel for some time (and it's been near impossible to get content from my wife!). She also had her own UStream.tv channel when she had her puppies as well as many videos on YouTube - she's got enough attention. :)

The breed type + org ideally suits the name and the extension.

I agree with grcorp that this is xxxx, but more mid range to upper range...minimally.

Most people will still recognize .org as some type of official organization affiliated with the keyword.

As for their breeding practices, well...business is business. I'm sure there are perhaps some things you are doing that they don't agree with.

Bottom line...it is a one and only .org for a very recognized breed and if they want it, they have to pony up the cash.

Edit: I guess I got "extremely" lucky with a drop catch a few years ago, no auction, got it for $60 though Pool.

Quite a push up the hierarchy for bulldogs.

Honestly, it is doubtful that labs will ever be knocked out of the top spot. Not impossible, but doubtful.

Yup, gotta love those uncontested pickups for $60 bucks.

Don't forget, this is by AKC registration #'s but probably a good representation. But - police and military usually won't care about AKC registrations and will usually get them form overseas (most likely FCI registered, though). GSDs and Belgian Shepherds (malinois to be percise) are your most common dogs in that line of work (yes, some labs, I know).

Many serious schutzhund people also don't care about AKC registration, they're UKC and FCI also. Top dogs there? GSD and malinois. If all the protection and working people register their GSDs then they'll give labs a run for their money.

As for bulldogs we've noticed a HUGE increase in them at shows - they're cheaper to feed (smaller = less food), cheaper to maintain (smaller crates, etc.) and you can have more of them. In a poor economy smaller dogs do better. French Bulldog went from #71 to #21 in 10 years.

If you look at the list, Leonburgers are #33, Cane Corsos are # 53, Icelandic Sheepdogs are #82 - all 3 of these are "new" breeds of dogs recognized in 2010.

This was not for $60, but I picked up:

minidachs.com - I like dogs, but not at all into breeding or selling.

I would have appraised germanshepherddogs.org at about $100 - shows what I know there.

Perhaps another breed.

But when considering the popularity of the breed and most rescue groups would likely use the .org. And those inquiring are typically an end user.

it's a matter of knowing the market.

I have numerous dog related domains in so many extensions and they get natural type in traffic. A couple of weeks ago I got a phone call (while I was on the road) inquiring about Sheepdog.mobi. I told them I was pretty tied up at the moment (I might have been on a conference call). I asked them to please make an offer via email. Never got a offer sent.

Dog people are serious about their dogs. And many are damn serious about specific breeds.

I've noticed a great increase in smaller breeds at the shows and even at the training centers.

I have had GermanShepherds.info for a few years with only lowball offers in that time, perhaps .info is not the extension of choice for dog lovers?

BTW we have a lovely 10 year old German Shepherd named Gypsy, perhaps I should just dedicate it to her!
