Barry Diller has a pesky habit of overpaying for digital properties.

Shows what development can do with average or poorer domains. In some ways it's better to focus on one or a few websites than collecting hundreds of domains.

True, but better to do both especially when your hundreds of domains are not average or poorer.

Yes, precisely.

As I pointed out, this was a Business he purchased (people Media) with assets (staff, office space, and domains).

People Media, Inc. made this happen. All the credit goes to that founder and CEO who made a business out of specific ethnic groups hooking up with one another.

The man did not buy just domains. He bought a legitimate thriving business.

The point here is enormous financial success was achieved regardless of starting out with long and funky domains. And also it's great to see a major corporation like IAC doing a big acquisition in this crap economy.

Honestly? The emphasis should be on a company People Media. That is what IAC purchased. A company.

Very misleading to think that IAC bought 25 domains with sites for $57 million.

IAC purchased a business called People Media and their assets.

How many times do I have to say it?

Of course they bought a successful business here. I agree. That is obvious.

The point I made is an entrepreneur started with crap domains and built them into a successful business.

So what I'm saying is it can be done with crap domains as well as good domains, because so many people are always knocking down building on crap domains. And this proves it can be done using any kind of domain.

That's all.

It was stated as a part of a line from a press release in your post to all of your pumping up crap domains.

An entrepreneur started out with a decent domain and went from there - PeopleMedia.com

This was a real business. That is what the purchase was about.

People Media operates more than 20 vertically focused online communities primarily geared towards dating. Many of our sites are the most popular in their category, including BlackPeopleMeet.com, the #1 dating site for Black & African Americans. Grouped together, our sites rank consistently in the top 10 dating sites according to comScore/Media Metrix. We are a major force in the online dating space which, according to Jupiter Research, will reach $1.2 billion in worldwide revenues by 2009.

The purchase of a company that started out small and grew while creating niche products to certain market segments.

Toys.com, Candy.com were domain purchases.

This is about a company being bought by another company because of their proven profitability and their paying members.

This was not about a deal based solely on domain names or sites. But that seems to be your primary focus.

Crap domains + crap sites = Instant profitability. That is the wrong message to be sending.

IAC Acquires Over 25 Dating Domains & Sites For $57 Million in cash.

Well this certainly proves not to laugh at nor ignore long domains!!!!

Great deal to happen for the domain industry right now! Cha Ching $$$
IAC acquired a company, a business.

That business is a company competing head to head with Match.com. Match .com is not just a site and not just a domain.

There is no doubt that the domain name registrations are a direct result based on their customers profiles and interests.

"People Media, LLC People Media, LLC" owns about 623 other domains

225k paying customers, and peanuts? I dont think so bud!!

do this math: 225,000 * $100 (one year subscription) = $22,500,000

That's alot of revenue, IMHO!!

If they are really getting 225k people to sign up for a full year up front, then damn. They have a good model and its well worth it but normally subscriptions flucuate so much from month to month constant promotion and marketing is essential to keep it up (if your lucky).
