If one wants to see the future, one should look at the past...

North American Toll Free prefixes have been around for over 30 years and yet after all that time, despite the addition of more toll-free prefixes (888, 877, 866, 855 [soon]), 800 is still the desired prefix to own since it has the best recognition by consumers.

Similar is true with .COM ... adding more TLDs will make little difference in the whole scope of things...

Heck, there are well around 100 "open" TLDs, including ccTLDs, already and yet .COM is still the most familiar to most people.

With all the above said, dilution is a valid issue nevertheless, but is much more likely to affect ccTLDs, in particular those commonly used locally in their respective countries, such as .DE, .CO.UK, etc - reason I believe that is many people in those countries are in the habit of using their ccTLD much of the time for localized content - new TLDs, in particular .mobile (or whatever they make it) could change people's behavior and get them thinking more internationally in regards to TLDs...

Ok ... rambling on ... it's late LOL!

Look at the effect .BIZ, .INFO, etc have had on .COM prices ... basically none; prices are higher than ever before.

It depends on the name. Overall, I think .com names have plummeted to rock bottom prices today. Sellers like BD have too much inventory and too little serious customers who are now venturing into new namespace with nice names in alternative extensions and using search engines to help their traffic along. I think the impact of search engine technology on domain name value is far greater than anyone here imagines.

I agree. Names have come down and have just started to head back up over the last 6 months or so. Yes, .com will be the overwhelming desire for medium and large business or those with desires to be there eventually. However, I think the nice one or two word info or biz for the small local entrepreneur is very welcome, particularly for generic names. There's only one flowers.com, but I'm sure many small town florists would jump at the chance for flowers.info, flowers.biz, or flowers.[some new tld], instead of or in addition to a longer .com. I think the cheap availability of good new tld's has effected the price of some .com's with the cheaper alternative.

It is like area codes... I remember about 10 years ago in Illinois we had 2 area codes for the whole state, now we have 25+.

I imagine the same thing will happen to domain name extensions...

Wow, this thread came back from the dead.. it's over 2 years old, and how many of those proposed "new TLDs" actually made it? ........yeah.

.mobi and .tel and the future has yet to be written as to whether or not anything will even come of them.

Except that when they introduce a new area code, there isn't generally a big rush on the part of people who have phone numbers in existing area codes to grab the same number, and other similar numbers, in the new area code in order to "protect their rights", or of speculators and phonesquatters trying to get as many "good" numbers as they can in the hopes of selling them or profiting from misdialed calls to them.
