business.com
sex.com
****.com
www.com
web.com
x.com
a.com
mail.com
mouse.com (would be worth it just for the email address)
yahoo.com (and then i'd register [email protected], just so i don't need to memorize another email address :))

Have to disagree with you here. Just like yahoo.com, these branded names actually means nothing without those million-dollar ad campaigns.

I don't need 10, I don't even need sex.com or mail.com, I only want to have 1% ownership of toronto.com. :D

Why would you pick these. If you got these first, they wouldn't be what they are today....

in other words, as names only, they are pretty worthless.

Good point, same with Yahoo, these are names which were branded and have little value without the zillions spent on marketing over the yrs.

Actually some of the great real (non-brandable) names mentioned in this thread were available when I first reg'd a domain in mid-1996 so no need to go back to 1992. Domains were almost unknown that far back, many were available in the mid 90's still.

Several others in this thread (some million $ ones) were names I recall looking at and wondering if I shoud reg or not and stupidly decided not to, even though at the time you did not even need to pay for them right away as it was done by mail billing statements by NetSol.

One reason I did not reg them was Whois and name availability lookup process was not widely known at the time and only some experts knew how to do it. One expert I was dealing with wanted $200 for him to check and reg names at the time and refused to tell me the process or give the registration url at NetSol. Rather than pay him $200 I did not reg some great names.

For example, in July 1996 I reg'd a name I still have today, and at the time Web.com was unreg'd and I decided against it. I just looked at it and my memory is correct. as it was reg'd July 2 1996. If I could only relive the past or have a time machine
