... I'd have no luck at all.

Picked up a product .com on the drop last month (cheap), set up a site, quickly got ranked & started making commissions on Amazon sales. (Not huge $, but enough to be interesting.)

Just found out that this particular product - which is very Christmas-season-specific - is now SOLD OUT for the remainder of the year. Not just at Amazon, but everywhere.

Oh well, now I have nearly a year to refine the site & improve the ranking even more ... and to hope that the manufacturer can increase production, so I'm not missing out on all these sales!

sometimes you really got to "look" at the cards you've been dealt

cuz.... to me, it reads like you already got lucky twice -

and could be on the path to reap more profits in the future.

Actually, I've only made back about half of what I spent on the domain ... but that was in one abbreviated shopping season. This asset should pay off better in years to come. (And the product has been around for 25 years and is growing in popularity, which is why they sold out this year!)

OK, maybe my luck ain't so bad after all. I just completed the sale of this domain - the .com of a type of product made by just one company - to that company, for low $x,xxx. (It was a $xx drop-catch 2 months ago.) Domaining does have some good moments!

Time to become the official resellers marketplace for that product (not sure if the product is able to be resold of course)

And you don't see anything wrong monetizing on a product that isn't yours or could be trademarked?

Around the same time they let the domain drop, they also let the trademark on the product lapse.

I actually didn't know they were the only manufacturer of this product until after I had picked up the domain. But I had made sure there was no active trademark before I caught it.

So, given a generic-seeming type of product with no trademark, I didn't see a reason not to capitalize on demand for it. (My income came from linking to Amazon listings, which were placed by resellers who had bought wholesale from the manufacturer.)
