I have some questions...

Is a .net domain good to be develop?
The .com, .org, .info are all parked...I own the .net (of a strong generic domain).
It's a good idea develop the .net?
If my site will grow up quickly I can loose much traffic?

Another question...how many great companies develop the .net? When I can find a list of famous .net domains?

Thanks.

slickdeals.net
php.net

I have several .net domains that I decided to develop after pondering over whether or not I lose traffic. There is no way for me to find out how many type the .com, but I can say I don't lose sleep over it each night.

I'd say develop it. Best of luck.

I don't see a problem with developing a .net. Just make sure down the road you acquire the .com and any other top level tld. You wouldn't want anyone else making money off your hard work.

Some off the top of my head that I can think of.......

fotolog.net
comcast.net
att.net
vmn.net
verizon.net
watch-movies.net

I suggest given the circumstance of your name, all parked or not developed, you should go ahead and develop.

If the domain has stickiness and gains repeat visitors then your name will gain traction over the other extensions. IF/When visitors make the mistake of typing your-name.com vs. your-name.net they will have learned and then continue to get it right.

If the other names were already developed, especially the .com , I would show more hesitation to invest resources.

honestly i would've never thought that you can LOSE traffic after developing a site.so there are occasions when parking is a better choice? is there any way to determine this though?

Not sure what JDK is referring to but I can tell you this...

When you pick up a drop or expired name that has a history, traffic, or a PR ranking, that traffic begins to diminish in time and the PR ranking drops rapidly.

It took me a while to realize this. Some domains did tremendously initially but dropped over time.

I am prone to go after domains with a history, strong site presence, traffic and age. I tend to stick with .com but will not say no to a prime .net, org, or .info starring me in the face.

Study your parking portfolio. Those with high traffic and poor conversion are ripe for development. This should tell you people are looking yet they are not finding what they are looking for. And chances are they are looking for what used to be there when they typed in that name.

I have come to never underestimate the value of web archieves for web history.

There is not a question...you will increase the value of the .com of your name quite a bit by developing the .net...that being said...you still can be very successful with a .net...look at the poker names....

I right now have the same dilemma...I bought the .net of a great generic name I wanted.... for $1500...I have put in offers of up to 15k for the .com (and believe I have given close to end user pricing) ...the owner (a domainer) will not respond to me....well, do I develop the .net? I have put this project off......and will do so most likely forever....it really sucks.

There are .net domains developed but I would only go for .com domain unless .net is one word domain.

I believe many people mistakenly type .com instead of .net.

I even mistype autotrader.com often when actually want to go to autotrader.co.uk .

.net is good but will always be second to .com.

it shouldn't stop carter from developing his .net. the only thing is that like james said he will lose to .com king from people mistaking the extension.I believe strong promotion and marketing can create a very successful and valuable .net name( especially if it's as strong as carter says).

Most TLDs are good to develop, I'd rather have a keyword.org or keyword.net than a sorta-keyword-something.com. In fact, I had a .org (.com was already an established website on the same topic) and my .org ended up beating out the .com in terms of SEO. The owner of the .com ended up dropping the name and I was able to pick up the .com though a back order.

This is a good discussion....

I think a keyword .org may be stronger than the same on .net IMO obviously depending on how you are going to use it...

This hypothetical example is what worries me If nothing is developed on the .com:

Are you all familiar with the site 'answers.com' ? It is a site where someone asks a question and then the users answer the question ...there can be a discussion on each topic as well...and the best answer is selected by the question asker...then future users who have the same question can view the responses and may have their question answered w/o posting - pretty good site and pretty good idea...Let's say you have this idea originally and nothing is on the answers.com yet (but it is owned by someone else)...and you have the .net - do you want to put this great idea on the .net or would you want to go in a different direction with a name like myanswers.com, eanswers.com, or ianswer.com (and lets say you own those - and maybe others). My concern is that the .com owner would just copy your idea and smother you...

I have this exact problem with a .net name I have...I am worried that after I spend the time and money to develop (what I consider to be) my great idea...the .com owner will just copy the idea and I am screwed.

If the .com was already developed with a different business model (and they seemed to be doing well with that business model)...I would be far less concerned and would go with the .net...but I am seriously considering going with a different .com.

I am really interested in hearing other opinions on this.

Sure! Develop it!

For example I have developed MEGASHARE.NET. In spite of .com is taken and developed too by other person I still get steady traffic and return visitors.

Good luck!

Well guys for add some details to this discussion...the domain name is RealityShow.net

I think to develop it into a website because the .com is parked.

I agree with all guys...from a domainers point of view I know .com is ALWAYS better because king (and because receive some natural traffic).
From a developer point of view I think the .net (if the .com is not develop into a strong brand) is good also.
The best thing is develop the .net and try to buy the .com soon :D

Thanks all for the help!!!
