Well guys for add some details to this discussion...the domain name is RealityShow.net

I think to develop it into a website because the .com is parked.

Have you talked to the owner of the .com and put in an offer? I'd say at least do that before you develop the .net. If the .net is developed then the owner of the .com would think that their domain is worth more since the .net is developed (as opposed to being parked / unused).

IMO that is a great name, too.

the answer is yes
especially if it is a one-word domain

in case of two words
the answer is less clear...

I agree with all guys...from a domainers point of view I know .com is ALWAYS better because king (and because receive some natural traffic).
From a developer point of view I think the .net (if the .com is not develop into a strong brand) is good also.
The best thing is develop the .net and try to buy the .com soon :D

Thanks all for the help!!!

I would buy .com first before developing it. I personally will not go for 2 words .net domains to develop.

Sorry, this is confusing me.

Sorry, meaning that in my situation, the .com is parked (not developed witha different business model and the owner will not return any messages) and that I am leaning towards not using the .net and going with a different name and that different name will be a .com.

I'd say instead of wasting your $$$$$$ on the .com (which I presume it will cost you quite a bit) just use the money in developing and most important in promoting your .net

People would say that .com might get some traffic from your name...I wouldn't bet on that...imho as long as a domain is well developed and dominates the SE's, the traffic will always be there.

This is 21st century and people became more educated into domain extensions...they won't just blindly type the .com into their browsers, but rather type the key phrase you rank for knowing that your website should be there (in this case they would mostly type "reality show").

Also bookmarking is a pretty new and popular tool which is used by many people, if they like your website they'll just bookmark it and return whenever they need to...

So...no need to worry about...just develop the .net or any other extension you like, do it properly and you won't need the .com at all. If the .com is parked you can also get a few backlinks with RealityShow.com as anchor and when people will type that your .net domain will come first.

Hope this helps

Thanks

That is a tough call. If the .com or the .net already has a good history (age, etc) then there is the question of capitalizing on that already branded words or words or to start fresh and attempt to bring a fresh reg to the forefront.

It can be done. But more than anything else it will take time to build a following.

I have a few that have done exactly that.

All are parked.

A couple have much traffic and few clicks.

A couple more have less traffic, but great PPC and very high conversion.

All the ones I am thinking of are perhaps 5 years old or so.

One is specific to the UK and would love to take it to the next level with a full site or portal. Superb PPC and conversion.

Good luck on your venture. If you want to bunch ideas off me in confidence, be glad to assist.

I have a couple of .net's developed, and at least one of those pays my dedicated hosting fees every month (non adsense revenue), so I can't complain. :)

I am becoming adept in Joomla. There is an adequate free theme for almost any subject.

That is my plans; Develop many mini-sites incorporating adsense.

You need to not make the site look like nothing more than a parked page.

I am currently working on PamlicoSound.com (great catch and personal favorite with age), eEat.net, BodyHuman.net, Snowed.net, and several others including .com, .net, a couple of .info perhaps, and .mobi. I am looking forward to snowed.net and already love the look even though I have done very little. Many upcoming endeavors will be personal projects and sites for friends.

Incorporate adsense in many styles and formats and absolutely do not overlook the potential of the adsense link ads. They do pay a great PPC.

I am not a fan of CJ or LinkShare as they have never performed well in the past but giving them another shot with better placement.

Amazon.com have some fabulous widgets and have paid decent in the past. The great part is you sign up directly with them.

I am also very in to promoting DNF member's sites. I think it adds cooperation which is what this forum should be about. A site just recently completed is StonesMusic.com. The bottom left hand menu features sites compatible with music and are peeps/members I know. I do not care about the extension as we all have our varied interests. I just want them to be an active site and not parked.

Agreed with Doc Com here.

Development is the key. I always said parking is for lazy people (no ofense to anyone)...people might be happy with their $1 - $5 per month from parking but some won't realise their domains can make that much daily with Adsense only plus several other ways to monetize...

Joomla is a strong CMS , we built some sites based on that in the past...the only problem is that these might be pretty easy to hack by an experienced hacker (had two Joomla sites hacked before).

People may also consider Wordpress as a platform to build their projects on. Personally I would go for Wp rather than Joomla but that's just me...

Personally I've been using Wordpress a lot to get sites up quickly (mainly because my web development skills aren't as good as they were when HTML was the king). Google tends to like WP sites as long as you keep them updated. Most themes are easy to edit so you can add in things like AdSense, Amazon.com widgets, etc..

I am becoming adept in Joomla. There is an adequate free theme for almost any subject.

How would you recommend Joomla to someone who has the most basic understanding of PHP / CSS but is OK w/ HTML?

You need to not make the site look like nothing more than a parked page.

I agree with these pointers. Amazon.com has great widgets / plugins for sites which pay OK when people purchase them (plus an Amazon search box never hurts).

Don't forget to also change the search box that might come with your template to an AdSense that will allow internet and site searching (with your code). I've found that search boxes get a good amount of clicks on them and when people click on the sponsored links, you get paid.
