It's nothing new.
They just want publicity from it.
Possibly gain some momentum and than sell it elsewhere.

Did they put it for sale before?

Great domain, I like it.

Excellent development potential for a site constantly displaying up-to-date news and dramas. News.com will never be for sale - this is a nice, healthy alternative. Could even be used for a sports site showing latest rumours or results. Even a technology site with latest developments. Endless potential.

Link does work for me.

Such domains are good access for big news coporation.

e.g

CNN owns www.headlinenews.com and they redirect it to their headline page. For those big companies, such amount of money is nothing as they got so much revenue from ads etc...

I don't know.
But, ebay is strange thing.
One time, I over heard someone talking about seeing some domain for sale
on ebay. Saying that he's going to let his boss know about that domain so
his company can use it.

Ebay can get you tons of eyeballs if done properly (whatever properly may be)
and one set of those eyeballs is just enough to get big sales.

If you look at domain sale history, you will see it will be worth at least xxx,xxx .

Because

coolnews.com sold for $30,000 ( cool news only searched xx per day whereas "latest news" search for more than 2000 per day.

If you got any domain with .com extension and the keywords search for xxxx per day, I might consider to buy it asap at your price.

That's difference.

only a confirmed sale of $1.5 million is news, not a listed price.
