If you are doing SEO for the first time, you can start with article submissions, blogging and social bookmarking. Later you can get into complex strategies like social networking, forum and community participation. Make sure, that you are getting backlinks from authoritative resources for getting maximum benefits in terms of keyword rankings and incoming traffic to the website.

SEO can be learned in forums too, join some SEO related forum and participate regularly, forums would be live work experience.
