Yes good find!

I am spending some time reading about previous cases such as barcelona.com and newzealand.com.

So far no further correspondence.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions.

Alpine town eh...ask for a year of weekends at a luxurious salet, free food and wine and a couple of buxom Swedish ladies (because Swiss ladies aren't that nice-looking).

Mmm pity I don't ski!

Try to turn the opportunity to make some money. Ask them what they will pay for the purchase of the domain name, that you will entertain offers.

Ask them to fire the person who let the name go when it was so crucial to the city's/company's continued success.

I don't mind holding onto the name for awhile. It makes a few bucks from parking, and I might even be tempted to develop. Probably best to avoid any possibility of being accused of solicitation, even if they contacted me first. I also get the impression UDRP rulings can be hit or miss, even if the balance lies in my favour here.

The New Zealand ruling gives precedent and gives you something to send back to them. I would send them a PDF of the WIPO ruling for that domain and insist that you have no intention of handing the name over to them. Insist you have legal rights to use the name.

I agree with labroca, write them back, say your not impressed with legal threats... you have consulted legal counsel who advised that they have no legal rights to the name... quote the WIPO decision. However, keep in mind there wont be too many buyers for the name of a town... advise them the name is for sale and quote a fair price... sell it to them!

Avon cosmetics took avon.com from the domain's owner through legal action, but that domain name is worth tons of money for Avon.

I would offer to sale them the domain name. If you're willing to part with the domain name for less than it would cost them to pursue legal avenues, then you're definitely in the clear.
