The M2M (Machine to Machine) market seems to have promise based on research reports put out by several market research firms. Here's one:

M2M technologies allow machines to communicate with each other across a wireless network. This is no new concept but it seems M2M technology and its applications is only starting to take off.

With the exception of 2008, the M2M market has been growing steadily for the last decade. The number of M2M enabled units being used is expected to rise from about 87 million to about 300 million plus by 2015. In 2010, the market for satellite M2M alone is expected to be worth about $1.5 billion and forecasts predict the market will be worth almost $4B by 2015. Hardly a huge leap in growth but nonetheless worth paying attention to. Cellular M2M market is worth about $15 billion and expected to be worth about $50 billion by 2014.

Current applications for M2M range from smart metering, to tracking and gps technologies in vehicles and smart health care systems. For now a significant part of M2M modules and applications are being developed for the business sector. Consumer applications for M2M haven't had nearly as much success as the industrial/business sector. And that's a point of interest for the industry. Research is being carried out by major mobile operators, the likes of Vodafone, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Orange etc These companies are eager to discover how M2M services will help you manage your home tech devices or office computing devices through your mobile phone, where ever you may be.

I think this is the decade to hang on to decent M2M domains. There isn't much mention of M2M in the news. Relatively, it is still a small industry but with tremendous potential. Mobile phone users in Europe may be the first to enjoy a cellular M2M break through for individual applications. Europe is currently leading the development of new M2M technologies.

With the amount of acquisition and partnership activity going on within the M2M industry, with special reference to big players like Telit Communications, Sierra Wireless, Orange, Cinterion (parent company is Gemalto) and T Mobile, I have a feeling the M2M break through could be realized before the end of the decade.
