I just got back home and noticed my computer was restarted by microsoft. A window message displayed MICROSOFT installed a security updated to protect my computer. Since the birth of Microsoft Windows, I've never seen anything like this happen on my computer with out me approving the changes or installation.

This just goes to show you, Microsoft has the power to install or change settings on your computer with out your approval and reset your computer. Who knows, what they did or what they wanted.

This new install has violated my rights, has anyone else experienced this today?

LOL

Most probably you have a virus/backdoor on your computer, that's all.

Or check if your system checking
sometimes, crtical patches are installed and asks for a restart.
itwaits for some duration and then restarts!

it happens in some critical patch updates...

Check in the security centre (I think Windows call it that) - check what your options are regarding Windows Update. Sometimes it's possible to allow automatic installation of critical security patches.

Else, it could be a virus/trojan so scan away.

not a virus and I did not setup my settings to upload automaticly... it appears someone else on another board was also hacked.

Microsoft can't just go around restarting and uploading fiels with out permission. Specially when the user has set the settings on manual!

I really doubt Microsoft restarts your computer out of the blue.

If you have set to manually update etc., I believe you have a virus and that was just a message from that.

Just run a thorough scan of your system with any good antivirus/is software( preferably KAV or any good one you trust).
Most probably it's a virus/trojan being masqueraded as a microsoft update.

Yep - I think one went out yesterday because when I got up this morning my computer was restarted.

I'm willing to bet it was a critical update - read the ToS with MS Windows - I'm sure it's in there that it says that they're allowed to do that.

This happens all the time with important security updates. I believe the last one (this particular one) was a critical IE update.

Yes, if you have automatic updates on certain "updates" they deem critical do/will restart your computer. It's normal. (for Microsoft)

It's a good idea to save energy and keep your PCs turned off when not in use.

This new install has violated my rights,

lol

when you accepted the Licensing agreement, you gave up all rights

as MS owns all rights to the OS on your computer

the only right you have is to turn it on and off....or by a MAC

thanks for the laugh :)

you'd rather email them and wait for a reply?
I got a ms live website with them and had NO LIE 4 month turn times on help requests or support.

There may have been an off chance that there was a temporary power interruption.

I have at least one computer running and on at all times. With construction projects or repairs to the power grid, the computer will go off and on in a flash...it is not long enough to shut every thing down but enough to reboot. Even the televisions will not go off. Just a quick flicker.

I've recently seen it happen with DNS servers running on Windows. Both the primary and secondary were rebooting at the same time causing total DNS failure for quite a number of domains for a few minutes. I am a Linux guy and I don't know a lot of Windows administration but I think it must be possible to disable automatic updates.

thats the isue, TOS or not, I disabled the option of installs - i dont care if its critical or not - I should have the power to approve or not! I did not like this unknown upgrade on my comp. From now on, i will turn my computer offer, I got sensitive data on my comp and dont want to have it hacked.
