It's always sad to lose someone or in this case an animal that you love, but at 84 years old, it's almost expected.

I did the same, a glob of peanut butter,...
and she licked the peanut butter off and wouldnd get the pill.
We went through the same thing with our Mini Schnauzer who was just over a year old, (7 in dog years) poor guy was very near death, it took 4 blood transfusions to save him for the medication to work, followed by 6 months of pill feeding, what a nightmare.. If your ever in this unfortunate situation again, understand that all these tricks are short term, you can fool them once, maybe twice if your lucky, but they'll always figure it out, dogs are incredibly smart, smarter than we give them credit for.... The way we did it, is one of us pulled his mouth open while the other dropped the pills in and poured water down his throat, he didn't like it very much at first, but he got used to it, and lived to bark about it.
