I voted .net as it is one of the Major tld's, second to .com. Many who did not own the dot com to their .net, have picked up substantial 'spilled' traffic from the dot com. From what I've seen, most successful .info or other sites using tld's other than the major ones, use a dot com or dot net to promote the .info.

It would be more likely for someone to try .net in the browser than .info. Many non-web savy people wouldn't even know about .info. Even many web savy people wouldn't bother.

Hardly anyone uses the .net for it's original intention. You can get away with creating any type of site on it, obviously.

As .net has been around much longer than .info, it appears to look more established. So, given a choice of .net and .info that have the same type of business, i.e. if the person even knows better to try typing in the .info, there's a greater chance that they'd trust the .net over the .info.

IMO, it's senseless for people who try to justify that .info is better, just because they missed the boat on the best major tld's, just as senseless as if I'd try to justify that .net is better than .com just because I missed the boat on the greatest .com names.

.INFO because it make perfect sense for the information searching internet users.
.INFO because of the tremendous response of my own .info websites.

.net have been to loooong the ltd you register ONLY if .com is taken,
everybody know The Boss uses brucespringsteen.net because
he could not get the .com (he even lost UDRP).

with .info it's a new ballgame!

Please indulge me a little in a digression on the logic of survey design and conclusions...

Suppose that you asked... which do you prefer?

A) $500,000 home
B) $100,000 home

and suppose the results were...

A) 98%
B) 2%

Would you then expect 98% of the respondents to have a $500,000 home? If so, why? If not, why?

I have the identical name in .com, .net, .ca and .info.

As of this week the stats are as follows, however the .net and .com have been falling about 3% per month while the .info has been climbing at a constant rate of about 8% per month. That is exactly why I invest in .info - for the future.

###.com type-ins 5000+ per day
###.net type-ins 500+ per day
###.info type-ins 50+ per day
###.ca type-ins 40+ per day

That's very interesting, interbuy.

Thanks for the .info! :)

Hi DomeBase,

I realise that before I 'disovered' this forum, you were the king of the polls, but unfortunately I missed all of that. So, I'm quite happy to listen to some theories of survey design. If your poll threads are still here, I'll have a read through.

man... I was getting ready to get on my little high horse and do a little debating... and now my plans are foiled your gentle deference and humility and good humor... ah well... :)

I think that there are generally two types of "what is your extension preference" polls... (1) polls that ask which extension you would prefer if you could get the same second-level name in each extension for the same price... and (2) polls that ask which extension you would prefer given unequal second-level name availability and current price differences...

Sometimes also, it is not exactly clear which of the two perspectives is being polled.

For my two cents, questions of type (1) are not as helpful as questions of type (2) because (1) tends to be hypothetical. In most cases, if I had a choice between ___.COM and ____.INFO for the same second-level name for the same purchase price, I would go with ____.COM even though I tend to think that .INFO has considerable potential because ____.COM generally has a higher current value and recognition. However, with 20 .COM registrations for every .INFO registration, most times one can get a name in .INFO that one can not get in .COM, or can get the .INFO for less than the .COM. In my view, those are the more interested tradeoffs/questions.

Back to the house example above. Most folks would pick a $500,000 value house for $100,000 instead of a $100,000 house for $100,000. However, suppose you could get a $500,000 house for $475,000 vs. a $100,000 value house for $50,000... that's a more interesting question... and more akin to our actual extension investment choices. That's why I posed the following pool here a while back...

Does this make me the "king"? nah...the King lives on in Hoboken where he is seen from time to time...

Good thread and great avatar :)
