Well it looks like I should have done more digging before selling bc1(.)ca for $1400.

Actually, the sale took weeks to complete and dragged on, but I had no idea that Shaw was starting a new TV channel in BC called BC1 this January. A person at webnames handled the sale, I had no idea Shaw was involved. It was a good price for a LLN.ca, but I would have held out for more if I had known what the domain was being used for. I did do a Google on 'bc1' at the time but no news of the channel came up, I should have dug through more pages. The first offer was $500, I countered with $1,500 and settled at $1,400. This is just part of domaining, but wanted to remind others to do a good search on your domain when an offer comes, if you can't readily see why someone would want it.

It's tough to know sometimes who is on the other end of the offer. Most of the time it is not like Caller ID unless the buyer is contacting you directly via their business email.

I'm going to send you a PM of how sometimes things can work out in your benefit.

The date they announced the channel was August 30 on their webpage, and the first inquiry came to me Sept 5. Don't know if I could have found out more about it. Just one of those live and learn things.

always do your research. its happened to me a couple of times when i was quick to accept an offer but doing my research has also paid off as well. you win some, you lose some. big companies seem to have no problem using throw away email addresses and lying about how they are when buying domains these days.

You can't do research if the sale take place on Se do or After nic. I sold an LLL.net for $5,000 on Se do and I checked the whois 2 months later - A big pharmaceutical in Europe bought the name!!!!

Strange thing is I'm a news junkie and never even heard about this channel til now. I pay a big fat cable bill to Shaw every month and would have loved dealing with them for this domain. My cost into the domain was $35 at TBR, plus a few years of reg fee.

To be honest, I hate like hell that we, in the u.s., can not buy .ca. There have been some very good names posted for sale on the forum lately that are very nice. But, they are .ca.

Absolutely agree. I even bought 3 .CA domains once -- just couldn't resist. I thought I could set up something with a Canadian, but the guy was all talk. Canada and Australia are such easy domain markets in comparison to the USA and .COM!

@HugeGrowth,

These things are just inevitable. The only way to prevent this EVER happening would be to act like the jokers selling domains on ebay. They assume that EVERY hypothetical buyer is a massive corporation and price their domains at $999,999. ... Or I suppose a person could just drag out negotiations for 1-2 months with every inquiry, waiting for news releases. But both these strategies would lose more buyers than they'd gain in revenue.

Still sucks though.

One of the key pitfalls to avoid in this business is 'hindsight syndrome'. I sold a gambling domain a couple of years ago (a .co.uk) for what I thought was a grossly inflated price to a USA buyer, only to find out that the buyer was a middleman for a HUGE Las Vegas casino. Of course you should check possible usage before you sell, but sometimes you have to take the price that you're happy with, and in gambling parlance, "read 'em and weep" afterwards.

Hmmm I do agree but it's totally different to the way you do .COM and any other domains. Also they all think they are sitting on $xxx, xxx names... so pathetic. Also you can't flip .com.au you have to hold them a minimum of 2 years before you can changed the owners, and you have to pay a fee for that...

I stop dealing with my own country tld a long time ago. The only good thing about .com.au would be the easy ranking in google.com.au because of the competition. So if your looking for a partnership in AUS you know where to find me :)

@ OP - I think you have to be happy with the purchase price regardless, you sold the domain for the amount so you must of been happy with the price to end up selling... just the way the game is played.

It's still a good sale. Don't look back. Also, buyers often have a set budget with varying degrees of flexibility - do not assume they would have paid much much more.

I agree Katherine. " Huge Growth" Good RIO and great fore sight to recognize the potential value of the name. bc1.ca was not a name that had obvious generic development potential.

the other side to examine is: you are fortunate that this channel decided to use, what you owned.

and in that respect, the transaction shouldn't be seen later with regrets.

On the other hand, BC1.com looks Chinese to me.
