Well it looks like I should have done more digging before selling bc1(.)ca for $1400.
Could've been and should've been $14,000. :upset:
For future reference, my neighbour to the north, this is what you will do:
Run a simple TM search... Is that gold I see in that there dirt?
Canadian Trade-marks Database
Search for: bc1 in the TM Lookup
within: All
with a status of: All
that were: All from 1865-01-01 to 2012-12-04
The search result(s) will contain the title, status, application number, and registration number (if it exists) of the documents. Documents found: 4
Trademarks: GLOBAL NEWS BC1 & Design, Formalized, 1588054
Trademarks: BC1, Formalized, 1589004
Trademarks: HYBRID-BC1, Registered, 1370758, TMA742931
Trademarks: BC1 & Design, Formalized, 1588396
If no TM shows up, and you're not parking the domain, check the server logs for interesting hostnames or IP addresses from around the time you receive the inquiry. If you find some corporate hostname, or a mysterious IP address, do a quick ARIN IP lookup on it. That might give you some intel to work with
Of course, hindsight is 20/20!
You could always check email headers too, just in case there's some leak there.
Good ROI though, and a great lesson for the rest of us!
