From November 2006 through June 2007, I was locked into negotiations with a domain seller offering a premium one word mid xx,xxx generic domain [negotiations started at mid xxx, xxx]. The seller, who didn't seem internet or domain savvy, kept reducing the price, so I thought I would drag it out for a couple of more months, and try and get him to come down another 5K before I bought it [the price at this stage was already under my budget]. Suddenly, in the middle of the negotiations, the seller stopped writing. Today I checked the whois info, and see the domain has a new owner, Microsoft.

Despite the fact that I've gained some confidence in my ability to spot under priced domains with huge branding potential, I've nonetheless set aside a half an hour of free time today to bang my head against a large rock.

Was the domain related to a tm? You might have saved yourself some serious legal trouble.

Sometimes you have to just pull the trigger dude...you could have probably gotten alot more than you would have paid for it from Microsoft...better luck next time..I have had similiar things happen to me, and it sucks!

Since they own it now...what was the domain name?

Yeah, I hear you. I'm cheap as hell, plus the domain would have been my first big generic purchase, a combination that turned out to be lethal in retrospect.

I read others here that said, speed means everything in domaining. This is true I'm sure, when buying or selling. Your better off, knowing your limits, and sticking to them. That will let you buy or sell, in a timely way and there are going to be times, you lose not matter what.

worst part is you probably inadvertently got the seller a good price by his having your offers to throw back at msft

happens to me all the time!

You see a bargain, make an offer, counter offer... and bah.. it's sold, you're late :(

Moral of the story: don't pull it for too long, complete the deals quickly

If you browse through previous year's sales at Dn Journal you will soon realize that most every single big money generic purchase looks like a great buy just a short time later. Until those sales start looking like great sales, and not great buys, then great names will continue to march higher.

Turn the page and find another one.

well..if it is waaaaaaaay better and shorter than surface.com you really gotta work on your ability to always buy at the low prices and not at the lowest always hoping for stuff to get cheaper..
..people try that in the stock market all the time..you can get something for a low price, but never at the Lowest..

Out of respect for the seller, I won't post the domain here in the forum. PM if you want to know, and please don't post it in the thread.
