Hi,,

P2p.com Stolen And Sold To NBA Player

BY LUKE FUNK

MYFOXNY.COM - A Union County, New Jersey man is accused of stealing a company's Internet domain name and selling it to an NBA player on eBay for $111,211.

Daniel Goncalves, 25, is facing theft and falsifying records charges.

Prosecutors say Goncalves hacked into a GoDaddy.com account of P2p.com, stole their domain name, and sold it to the unsuspecting NBA player on eBay.

There is a large community of individuals who frequently refer to themselves as "domainers" who buy and sell domain names they speculate will become more valuable over time. Two and three letter domain names are particularly valuable as they are easy to remember and generate larger amounts of traffic, which produces revenue.

Because of its short length and connection to the exploding Peer to Peer file sharing, the domain name P2P.com was particularly valuable, with an estimated value of between $160,000 and $200,000 at the time of its theft.

Prosecutors claim that in May 2006, Goncalves illegally accessed the GoDaddy account belonging to P2P.com and initiated a transfer of the domain name to his personal GoDaddy account.

They say he then moved the domain name to a different registrar and listed the name for sale on eBay.

Prosecutors say NBA player Mark Madsen was unaware that the domain name was stolen and purchased it.

Goncalves is free on $60,000 cash bail.

The future of the P2p.com domain name is still tied up in civil court.

As long as DN industry doesn't have a clearing house similar to DTC the thieves will do what they usually do.
Without transparency DN will be a an investment class for hobbyists.

Hijacked from a GoDaddy account...??

...These Registrars have got to move past the 'provide a place to simply house your names' stage - and, get serious about investing whatever it takes to provide fail-safe security for their customer's domains...

In this day & age, no domain should ever be able to get moved, unauthorised, by anyone except the registered owner of it...

Do you have any idea how low of a margin they're making? If someone is looking for a safe place to register his domains, then he better start an account at a registrar with a double lock registrar like at Moniker or Fabulous.

I hate how the media tends to belittle domainers im how they use words such as speculate. Its not speculative when you see the figures. Its a market, a very good market that has hundreds of thousands of dollars tossed around regularly.

I hate ready articles about domainers, and domains because none of them have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

And regarding godaddys security... Its not certain that its their fault. as you know, any one of us can transfer a name out, or "push" a name out whenever we want. It has more to do with password protections, and keeping email safe that is where most of anything a hijacker will need will be.

I mean, what else can godaddy do?

about a year and a half ago someone got access to my email account. in turn they got access to all my account and took all my domain names. Godaddy was by far the most professional register in the incident. Within minutes of me contacting them, all the names were frozen, and I had all my names back to me in my account within 24 hours.

Best thing you can really do is change your email passwords frequently, and if you can help it, dont store information in your email that can compromise everything you have. If you have to print out your documentation.

How its can be stolen from Godaddy ?
If it will be possible to steal direct from godaddy i can guarantee what all good domains will be stolen.

Need to be a butt head to loose domains from account as i am sure there are no bugs in gd system at all :)

Court will left this domain in new owner hands. As i thinking previous owner decided to take it back after it becomes more valuable ;)

Most of time i reading legal section i see to stupid previous owners who selling domains by pp or any other method and so on.......
