RodgerCuzner.ca is a politican in the House of Commons from Nova Scotia. He forgot to renew his website RodgerCuzner.ca and someone grabbed it. They now have a dating page on the website.

This can only hurt the domainers in the long run, perhaps even serioulsy. I wish there was a way the domaining community could put some pressure on the person that grabbed this name to be decent and give it back. It's not like it's findadate.ca, it's obvious squatting, and it's going to hurt all of us.

Anyone reading the article is already thinking less of domainers if they don't know much about domaining. Just reading it makes me think less of domainers, and I am one!

Rodger has already commented to CBC News “Guys watch for these opportunities and they see the opportunity and then they come back and sell you back the domain site.” Unfortunately he is correct.

This seems really stupid to do this to someone who could at some point influence the domaining laws in this country.

Agreed. Like we need more bad press. I wouldn't mind showing the person(s) who did this how I feel about it in person : )

Hopefully this is just a blip, but bad news always travels faster than good news.

The fact of the matter is that someone is going to register it, if any traffic is perceived available.
Heck, even network solutions would place ads on it, give them any opportunity. I understand RodgerCuzner,s misfortune, but its up to us to maintain our domains, no one crys, when we forget to renew, the domain goes to Pool or the likes and someone else get to own it.
Now, on the other hand, I would hope, RodgerCuzner, would be able to purchase it back reasonably, from the new owner, but hardly for a free transfer.
Hey onlinestore, did you not forget to renew lighthouses.ca at one time, I,m sure most of us would say, "wow, thats a shame" but hey.....
I think RodgerCuzner,s should suck it up and offer a few bucks to get it back, its not the new owners fault for the situation.
Thats my thoughts :)

Looks like cira treats names in a unique way.

In this case, it seems to be purely a reg to gain off the previous traffic, or sell back to the previous owner. Personally it's not the kind of reg I would make. I could see some rationale for someone buying it if it was a common name, like MikeSmith or something, at least you'd have a better argument. Or if it was a generic term or phrase that could have other use. But it's the kind of story that gives domainers a bad name and why some people confuse domaining with squatting.

There has to be a sense of responsibility for the owner as well and there are safe guards in place such as the 30 day suspended period which allows the customer 30 days of grace to renew the domain. I get plenty of notifications from my registrars when the domain is close to being suspended, is suspended and is close to being dropped. While this case give us bad press, all of the owness is not on us as domainer for "pouncing" on opportunities. However myself, I would not take advantage of someone elses name as this is an ethical issue.

A friend emailed me a link and pointed out how the name "domainers" and "cybersquatters" are used interchangeably.

When you tell people you are a domainer, is this what you want them to think of you?

I just can't find any up side to this happening. Most non-domainers are forming an opinion of our community from stories like this one. They don't understand what we do, I'm sure there are many that think this is all we do. I'm sure all of the politicians will hear about this, how can that be good.

The person who grabbed that name doesn't even look to be Canadian. Tsk tsk.

I got a 3 letter at pool and turns out it was used for a semi popular festival in Ontario. I won't be putting a porn site on it but I won't be giving it back either, or even selling it to them. Sucks for them I guess but what the heck.

Regarding RodgerCuzner.ca, it appears the new owner, could be actually, trying to get Rodger to respond, with a buy out, but antagonizing the situation with the matchmaking site, almost like, "Whats the best why to get under Rodgers' skin," and, I would say, its working, by the reaction thats happening.
Strange but clever strategy, if thats so hmmmm...
However, this would not be a method I would endorse.
