I remember the day I taught Marley to walk down the stairs. He looked EXACTLY like this little whippet and made the same gurgling sounds.

LOL. I love my boys. They are so well mannered , smart and funny. Maynard is taking agility courses already and looks like he will be a champion (his teacher tells me as Maynard is a very fast learner). And he's already catching frisbees (whippets are the frisbee catching kings).. My boys will be able to run over 35 MPH when they are full grown. Running and playing with them in the park is pure joy.

True story-

Whippets are very hard to find as people REALLY prevent from overbreeding them.. I have been looking for the perfect whippet here in Canada for a year before I found my guys.

Here's the story.. I live in Toronto but spent the summer in Montreal. I was walking home one day in MTL and I saw this gorgeous whippet puppy being walked (Maynard who is pictured earlier). You RARELY see people walking whippet pups as they are just rare dogs. I haven't seen one whippet puppy walked anywhere in a year.. I saw some grown whippets being walked, but not pups.

The night before I first saw Maynard, I told my significant other that WE ARE GETTING a whippet asap, as I just love the breed. Then the next day I see Maynard.. So I cross the street to his side and talk to the person who was walking him.. Maynard was so small and cute, only two months.. I put his little tiny head in the palm of my hand and just fell in love with him. I said to myself, "this is meant to be".

Anyway, the person walking Maynard that first day wasn't the actual owner (he was dogsitting him), the owner was at work that day (the owner is a vet assistant and works at a vet office).. So I left my number with the guy to give to the owner to ask if there are anymore whippets in Maynard's litter (as Maynard was only 2 and a half months at the time).

Lo and behold he calls me that night and offered to meet at a coffee place down the street. I showed up and he brought little Maynard with him.. I don't know what got into me, but I offered $5k on the spot for Maynard ($5k CANADIAN).. I just had to have him. lol

To make a long story short, he said that there is another litter and a pup he saw with black ears (Marley, who's pictured earlier).. He said he was going to get Marley himself if he didn't get Maynard. He said he will bring him in (as he is a veterinarian) from out of town and that I would only have to pay $1000 for Marley. He said he wouldn't sell Maynard.

I said okay, I just wanted a whippet.

About a week later he calls me up telling me Marley is in and asks to meet me so I can take a look at the dog. I meet him at a park and he brought Maynard along with Marley.

At that point I HAD TO HAVE BOTH.. I said "$6k for both or no deal".. He told me that he can't sell Maynard because he got attached to him in such a short time. I told him to think about it, and with the $6k he can easily get another whippet pup and have $5k to himself.

He then told me he would have to talk to his wife about it as she was attached to Maynard as well.. About 4 days later he calls me up and asks me if the $6k for both dogs are on the table. I said, of course.

That's how I got my 2 boys back in September.. Their names were "Bandit" and "Tofu" from the previous owner, and I changed the names. I will be back in Montreal next summer and he asked if I would breed Maynard with Marley's sister (because he got Marley's sister after I bought both boys from him).. I said sure, as long as I get the 1st pick of the litter and it's free. He said "sure".. So eventually I will have 3 whippets. Maynard and Marley along with Maynard's future son. And Marley's sisters' son.

Damn dude, 6k?! You could have got the domain for that! lol

Very cool story...hope they are good puppies!

I have always got my pets for free or as strays, seem to be the best kind.

Focus - you can't be all bad. You like animals. Counts for a lot, especially if you take strays. Peace man.

You're a funny guy. I'm warming to you. When I was a kid of 17 I used to bring all the RSPCA dogs back to my parents' house that I could get in my car - we kept them all. One of them travelled the entire globe with us and died in the USA where we were living at that time. Faithful little *****. Yeah lots to be said for dogs. The canine variety :D

she was a mixture of Belgian shepherd dog, wolf, and Alaskan Malamute. :)

Out of curiosity - what flavor Belgian shepherd? (Malinois, Sheepdog / Groenendale, Terveurn, Lakenois)?

Damn dude, 6k?! You could have got the domain for that! lol

6K is nothing. Kiri had 3 puppies -one sold with full breeder's rights for $2K, one sold under a "co-own" for $1K and the other was sold as a pet for $1K.

If Kiri was titled, you could easily double those prices.
If she has a SV-1, SchH3, and a few other good titles, it could have easily been $3K-$4K for pet, $5K-$6K for co-own and more for full breeder's rights.

A friend of our's imports GSDs (from Germany - he goes there to select the dogs). He imports them for $3K-$5K, then he trains them, shows them, gets them rated and ranked and either sells them domestically (in the US) for $10K-$25K or ships them to Japan for $50K-$75K.

That's a groenendale (sheepdog) - beautiful dogs. We have tow malinois (malis):

Hmmm....I'll have to think about that one. Where there's a will there's a way

Good luck. I can set Focus up with a good trainer but I don't think I can help you. :)
(Our friend is also one of the few trainers / breeders in the US who get that much for dogs (and they're worth it)- ignore those "executive protection dogs" - that's BS)
