Question 1)

We all have seen how NameMedia is hungry lately.
Who do you think will be the next prey this predator will eat?

Question 2)

Few weeks ago someone wanted absolutely I understand DNForum.com was about to be purchased by NameMedia.
True or intox?

Question 3)

Are these NameMedia purchases good or bad for the domaining industry:
For example, I do not use parking services, but the fact NameMedia acquires several actors has been of benefit for the domainer?

Question 4)

Is there a fish bigger than NameMedia?

A lot of consolidation has been taking place over the last 2 years...and it's not only NameMedia.
IMO it's both a good thing and a bad thing.
Good thing: the domain industry is getting more and more professional and competitive.
Bad thing: the good portfolios will be concentrated in fewer hands and prices will skyrocket. Good for the sellers, bad for the prospective buyers as domains are getting unaffordable.

Question 2)

We have the response.
And I have to admit that I like it.
Thanks Adam.

A domain forum is like a media site, it must be independant!

...

Biggedon:

You say: "Who care?"

I care and any domainer should care.
It's never good when a company has a monopole.
When there is no competition what genrally happen is:
- The service start to be of lower quality or without improvements.
- Pricing increase.
...
The one that suffer is the customer and here the customer is the domainer.
This means YOU, ME and MOST of the FORUM VISITORS!
So again, I confirm: I CARE.

...

I hope to get info about the other questions.

I agree with you on that as it seems odd Biggedon would not care since he is a long-time professional domainer. Maybe he was joking?

I certainly care about any news regarding Namemedia since Namemedia is probably the major player at this time and I hear are looking to expand and make even more acquisitions and buying portfolios. Their purchase of Afternic and new enhanced promotions for 20% commission has great potential and a much welcome service.

IMO

If anybody new with certainty who was going to get purchased next, they would not post it here.

All this action is good for domainers. Brings attention to domains, and the more the big guys acquire, the less quality there is out there. If you have decent domains they will likely appreciate.

This is just the start of an even larger consolidation period IMO, which I think will be great for quality domain owners, albeit make it close to impossible for newbies without big dollars trying to get started. That time is almost gone.

I think a lot of the big consolidation action will be taking place among a select group of domainers and this will continue for some time.

At the moment we have about six ultra high quality mega players:

NameMedia
DemandMedia
Marchex
iREIT
VerticalAxis
NameAdmin

and a larger group of high quality large portfolio owners, who could be either targets or hunters in the next consolidation phase, such as:

Dotzup
Xedoc
Telepathy
MsJello
Tucows
DomSponsor
Fabulous
FMA
Innovation
ModernLTD
WN
MostWanted
DotcomAgency
DomainFinance
eCommerce Adv..(bonkers)

plus others that don't spring to mind now (additions welcome)

Plus, of course the outstanding smaller portfolios (quality over quantity), such as:

Anything
DigiMedia
National A-1
Reflex
Rick S
CES
plus many high quality smaller holders

The real turning point in the industry will come when a major publicly-listed corporation finally realizes that whoever controls the domain space can potentially control the net, or at least leverage it to their advantage. If one company were to buy all of the above (which is quite possible), then we may have real cause for concern in terms of what Francois was saying.

Where does Nokta fit into the scheme of things?
They were prominant at traffic and seem to have a very large portfolio.

Someone will need to be kind and explain me one day this strange interest of "Brings attention to domains".
I mainly see negative points:
- More domainers will enter in the game attracted by all this "easy money" buzz.
- Everyone start thinking he owns a gem and is asking crazy prices for his domain.
It look likes the result is:
- Less domains to buy and at higher prices.

shaolinmonk

Thanks for your detailed response.

But where do you place SEDO in this classification?
And where are the Parked.com, the DomainTools.com, ...
Or this classification only intend to show portfolio owners?

I will be interested to see the same for:
- Registration
- Parking services
- Marketplaces
- Domain Tools
...

Do you know today other companies like NameMedia that own most of the panel of domain services?
And who are these so big companies that NameMedia cannot purchase?
Can NameMedia be purchased itself?

When an industry is mature there is 3 or 4 big companies, not only one like it appears today.
Help me find these companies or I will think the danger is already here and you are blind.

LOL,

Thanks for the tip but I do not have anything against NameMedia.
I am just concerned to understand how this industry is structured.
And try to see in advance the big changes that should happen.
The monopole of NameMedia is one of the possible things that may happen.
