Can anyone recommend a professional domain appraiser?

I need a professional appraisal done by an appraiser that has been valuing names for a living for at least 2 years.

Thanks

For legal reasons, it needs to be an "official" written appraisal from someone who is an appraiser by profession.

Jeff, in general, paid appraisals are bull. They're as worthless as the ink they're scribed with.

Try the cooltool. It has been fairly accurate if you use it right. You can get it from mudfence.

Good Luck!

What sort of legal reasons would this be? I can;t think of anything that would require a "professional" appraisal, which is good, because there is no such thing.

On the other hand if you could produce evidence of the fact that you have been offered $$$ for the name, I would think that that could be useful.

There could be a lot of reasons for a written appraisal.

Estate, divorce, charity donation. The appraisal may be worthless as far as actual value goes, but priceless in other circumstances.

Just a bit of follow-up.

Even though I have started nameslave.com for more than 2 years, I dare not called myself a professional domain appraiser. See, my signature only reads "knows a thing or two about domain names". :D

Agreed. One man's meat is another man's poison. And no one has a clue yet on how the growing acceptance for .info and .biz will change the value equation for .com.

Take the advice of what others have said here, there are so-called professional appraisers, but their evaluations aren't worth it.
If they appraise your name for 1k, they wouldn't even offer you half of what they appraised it for.

The only for sure bets on value a 3 letter/number or less top tld's.

Everything said above was/is absolutely true. However, if it benefits you to have a high appraisal, then there are plenty of companies that will give you what you need, and the great thing about it is that no matter wich one(s) you choose, they will all be grossly over value/no where near accurate.

Just punch in "domain appraisal" in any search engine. Cost is anywhere from $10 to $100.

If your situation benefits you to have a "below value" evaluation, then your probably outta luck.

Professional Domain Appraisers - The very definition of an oxymoron! What degree or certification from an accedited educational institution can they show you? Who appointed them to be a PDA? A Professional Domain Appraiser is a mythical beast - think of them as you would unicorns or leprechauns. If you just need a paper to show some one - anybody can do that for you and claim to be a PDA. In fact why not just do it yourself - there is nothing stopping you from claiming you are a PDA too.

Agree 100%, and my hunch is that its most likely this type of situation Jeffb is dealing with. However, we domainers in our "after-market tunnel vision" can't probably see reasons for "professional" domain appraisals (and whether they're worth it or not) other than determining their sale-value. BTW, in US its IRS time and some folks are being asked by their accountants to produce these type of documents for tax purposes.. ;)

Agree with you said DuKe in priciple, however, practically speaking outside of the domainer community so few are even remotely familiar with ins and outs of this business that the minimum general standard would be something like an entity having a consistent internet presence while offering and performing paid "professional" domain-name appraisals for third parties for a significant period of time and/or having had done a substantial number of such appraisals (keeping a record of same). I know in the past Great Domains would probably have qualified under these criteria; not sure if they still provide this service or if there are other similar type services? (never had any personal interest in these).

P.S. It does not matter at all for pure business purposes but when it comes to legal/tax or other such matters, having/producing a "Professional" document (sometimes a few years down the road) can matter a LOT!!

I see your point Heat. Domainers understand that the appraisals are worthless. I just hate that someone has to pay a fee for completely bogus information - regardless of its end use.

I appreciate all of the comments about the lack of value of a domain appraisal. I still need one though. Sure, there are hundreds of appraisal services, but probably only a handful that have been appraising names for more than a year or two.

The most important part of the appraisal for me, will be the analysis behind the appraisal. Some appraisals only supply a program generated value with little analysis supplied. Others provide more back up analysis such as projected revenue from traffic, comprable sales, etc... This is the type I need. If anyone has seen appraisal that provides this type of back up, please post the appraiser's name.

Thanks
