I had some time of my hands so I did something i've wanted to do for a while and created a chart of how rare certain domain names are. It shows how rarity doesn't always reflect prices (otherwise 3 letter .com's would be screwed). Post comments or point out any mistakes if you want. Also, I think it would be interesting if everyone posted the rarity rank #'s in their own order according to how they value each domain name.

Code:
(RANK) (ODDS/RARENESS) (EXTENSION)

#1 -------- [10 to 1] -------- (1) Number (eg. 1.com)

#2 -------- [26 to 1] -------- (1) Letter (eg. A.com)

#3 -------- [100 to 1] ------- (2) Number/Number (eg. 99.com)

#4 -------- [260 to 1] ------- (2) Letter/Number (eg. A2.com)
[520] [260 to 1] ------- (2) Number/Letter (eg. 2A.com)

#5 -------- [676 to 1] ------- (2) Letter/Letter (eg. AB.com)
[2028] [676 to 1] ------- (3) Letter/Hyphen/Letter (eg. A-B.com)
            [676 to 1] ------- (4) Letter/Hyphen/Hyphen/Letter (eg. A--B.com)

#6 -------- [1000 to 1] ------ (3) Number/Number/Number (eg. 100.com)

#7 -------- [2600 to 1] ------ (3) Letter/Number/Number (eg. A33.com)

676 to 1 ------ letter/hyphen/letter (e.g. x-q.com)

676 to 1 ------ letter/hyphen/hypen/letter (e.g. x--q.com)

(ie same rarity as letter/letter)

As you say, rarity, as calculated by these criteria, doesn't always reflect prices.

Perhaps it we could say "normally doesn't reflect prices".

It is possibly more usefull to compare like to like, eg all letters, or all numbers, or all mixed letter/numbers etc?

Thanks, I forgot the hypens. I added them to the list.

This chart really isn't mean to be a guild of value, it's just stats on names. This is a good way for two domain names (that both have no value besides rareness) to be compared to each other. Obviously a domain with hyphens (like www.a--b.com) despite it's rareness is considered basically worthless. When you think about it though, they are pretty rare. There are only 1352 .COM domains 4 characters or less that have hypens in them.

Also look at 3 char .com's. N/N/L is more rare than L/L/N by more than double. 2600 to 1 compared to 6760 to 1. Pretty big difference. So someone who thinks that BB4.com would be the "same" as 4BB.com might be surprised by these stats (not saying that either is more valuable)

I'm a 4 letter domain person myself. I go for the pronounceable ones mostly. 3 letter domains seem like they have died down for the most part. Many people are stuck sitting on huge collections of them now just waiting for that right buyer. Acronym domains are a coin toss most of the time anyway.
