Am I missing something? Snapnames offering to "backorder" available domain names starting at $59???!

I own FloridaWebDevelopment.com. The .net and .org are unregistered. So, I played around at snapnames and see this:

Out of curiosity, I entered random jibble jabble, same thing:

For the pro SnapNames users: can you imagine how many times you looked for a name that was readily available only to buy it at a "$59 bargain" through snapnames?! Or do they eventually let you know the domain is available before plopping down an inflated fee? I don't use snapnames so I wasn't sure what was really going on....

snapnames is just a backordering agent, you're the one that should check the domain availability

:worried: Yeah..."backorder" agent for names that EXIST...right? How can you backorder something that doesn't exist. It's not about making whois queries...it's about snapnames making available domains appear taken and calling it a "backorder". As if they grabbed something for you that was taken is my concern.

I have never backordered an available domain, and I doubt others did. It's your problem if you backorder an available domain.

My 2 cents.

You don't want to backorder at snapnames ?

You can also register domains with snapnames but price is $100,000 per domain.

Just to make clear, I haven't backordered anything. It just reminds me of what Registerfly did. And I don't believe it's impossible not to accidentally register an available domain through Snapnames.

There are quite a few people who live, breathe and die by buying names through the aftermarket. To hand check every inquiry at another company just to make sure the domain is really taken seems very inconvenient. A few domains, yes....but not to the major aftermarket buyer.

You don't want to backorder at snapnames ?

I was browsing around their sub-forums and found this post:

just got off phone with nelson brady at snap

he says that those reg fees posted on manage.snapnames are a "deterent" to keep people from registering names there, which would conflict with their registrar partners

he said it was some generic interface which has been there for some time.

Now that doesn't make sense. I was able to go all the way to checkout with a domain I randomly entered. Up to payment point where they asked me to FUND my account. They even made me agree to user terms.

If only I had the $100,000 to check and see if they really charged people...now who is going to do that? "deterrent" to keep people from registering names there - doesn't make sense. The most logical step would be to not have it available? Just wondering.

I think they should forward people who like to register domains with them to other registrars rather than allowing people to register at crazy prices.

If you are drunk, you might see it as $10 per year.

Good point. Don't other companies publish something along the lines of:

"We don't do this directly but here is a list of partners/sponsors who work with us......"
