I know that the redemption periods vary for each registrar. Does anyone know how long after the expiration date of domain registered at Dotster does the owner have to renew it?

The redemption period does not vary. That is controlled by the registry, not the registrar. It is 31 days for com/net and 30 days for org.

Perhaps you are thinking of the hold period, which does vary between registrars. I think Dotster holds domains for 42 days after the expiration date.

Yes, most registrars have their own grace periods of usually some 30 - 40 days but definitely less than 45 days (before which they are eligible to delete a renewal and ask for a refund from the registry). They do that not because they are *nice*: it's just a last resort to retain clients. But even if it enters the official, registry-level RGP (Redemption Grace Period), registrants are still able to renew their expired domains (just for some extra "recovery" fees). This is actually the reason why there is RGP in the first place.
